Being cooped up indoors doesn’t sound like fun at all, but there are some risks in pursuing your favorite outdoor activity in the wintertime. Protecting your extremities from exposure to frigid temperatures is vital to a safe and fun outdoor adventure. Plan ahead and know what to look for with these 10 important tips for avoiding frostbite.
- Limit the amount of time you are outside in cold, wet, or windy conditions.
- Pay attention to weather forecasts so you don’t get caught by surprise.
- Dress in multiple layers of loose, warm clothing. The air trapped between the layers acts as insulation.
- Make sure your headwear includes ear coverage, such as a headband.
- Mittens are warmer than gloves. Consider wearing a thin pair of moisture wicking gloves underneath heavy mittens for better hand protection.
- Wear socks and liners that fit well and pull moisture away from your feet.
- Stay hydrated but avoid alcohol, as it causes you to lose body heat faster. Drinking hot beverages like cocoa or tea will help warm you up faster.
- Eat a well-balanced meal before heading out for a hike or sports activity.
- If traveling, pack an emergency kit of warm clothes or a thermal blanket. Make sure others know your route and when you expect to arrive at your destination.
- Keep moving. Exercise keeps blood flowing to your extremities, but don’t work to the point of exhaustion.
Know and be alert for signs of frostbite. Early indicators include red or pale skin, a prickingling feeling, and numbness. In severe conditions, frostbite can start in as little as five minutes. If these early signs are spotted, seek shelter as soon as possible and watch for further change in skin color. Being prepared and watchful can save you a lot of unpleasantness.
