Comments about Sevylor U231 High-Performance Sevytex 1 Person Kayak:
I am 5'10" but it is designed for people shorter than 5' 6" in my opinion. I improvised a little to fit in it and I am happy with it though.
It feels tough on the surface, but I am content to stick to flat waters. Flat waters can get really choppy when it is windy. Two foot high waves is not uncommon in flat waters like reservoirs or slow rivers. This is exciting enough for me...
After several excursions, I became fed up with water flooding even with the four bottom plugs plugged in. Water mainly came through the bow and the stern because of gaps. The black end jackets hid the gaps. I tried to use balloons to seal off the water without much success. So I decided to order a good bilge pump recently. I got tired of paddling with 5 gallons of water sloshing in my kayak!!
The kayak is very stiff for an inflatable thanks to the 7lb stiff inserted inflatable floor. The yellow inflatable sides can be pumped to 3 lb limit.
3 lb may seem lame to you but it is stiff so 7 lb floor feels close to a stiff basketball.
Overall, I think that it is a good value for the money, but I would recommend STRONGLY that you add the rudder kit as it will help keep it straight without you having to paddle extra to keep it straight. It is a rocker which mean that it swerves a lot every time you paddle either side as much as 30 degrees if without the rudder kit.
The rudder kit is somewhat poorly engineered as the rudder keep on rubbing against the edge of the kayak and it is kind of heavy because it is made of cheap steel. I had to devise a 4 inch disc with a hole in center made of arylic mix kit obtainable at plastic shops. I place the aryclic disc on the rudder mount to keep the rudder from rubbing the kayak.
I also cut a pair of four foot long white transulent stiff plastic tubing bought at any hardware store and insert the rudder control ropes through. The reason is to isolate my legs from the rudder control ropes thus helping my smoother foot lever control of the rudder by the ropes without the friction of my legs resting against the ropes.
In other words, the kayak came in as a uncut diamond and I polished it to perfection.
I look forward to my next excursion with the new bilge pump, because I will feel more confident to go over a greater distance than ever! I can go 10 miles in a day in this kayak free of bilge water as much as possible!
