It's ok

It works all right. I didn't use the kayak without it so I can't say if it made much difference.

Totally worth it

The skeg makes a big difference. Instead of going around in circles I now go ahead without effort. Totally worth buying.

Make my Tahiti easy to manage!

By

The first time I took my Tahiti kayak out in the water, it was without the Skeg. I had a very frustrating, stressful experience. I couldn't keep the kayak moving in a straight line, much less maneuver around objects. Before giving up on the kayak, I purchased the Skeg and took the kayak back out. I was pleasantly surprised at what a difference the Skeg made to my kayaking experience. The kayak was easy to maneuver, both straight and on turns. My wife and I rode on a river both with against the current with ease. I can't wait to get back out on the water!!

Sevylor skeg

By

I've only used the skeg once so far, but it definitely seems to improve directional stability; without it the kayak would fishtail incessantly. My only objection was the complete lack of installation instructions from Sevylor. I had to call the company and the support person emailed me good detailed photos. I had no idea what the purpose of the sharp projection on the skeg was. To install the projection into the fitting on the stern of the craft, the vinyl had to be scrunched quite a bit, but it does attach acceptably. Just remember, you may inlate the side chambers, but do not inflate the floor before attempting to install.

Questions about this item:

Shopper  Why Did You Choose This?
Susan B  I read more reviews after ordering a new Sevylor FIJI from Campmor everyone said Fijis need Skegs But Since I did not know the word skeg It didnt mean anything .... rudder, keel or outriggers would have got my attention. So send it quick before we start going in circles in the mangroves !
Vela S  hello! do you have any video how install this how install Sevylor Skeg to inflatable kayak ?
JOSEPH D  With mine, it had a slot that you just slide it onto the boat.
BOB J  Very easy! Just need to untie one half of rope to slide it in then it pops into hole that rope goes through. You'll see when you get it. Just leave it on even when you deflate it. The boat is just Ok without it. The skeg makes it awesome!!!!!
CHARLES S  no I don't but it is really easy it just hooks on bottom and over the top
STACEY H  it installed to ours easily. You install after inflated. Ours fits under our top flap and there is a small slot that holds it in place. Made a huge difference with keeping kayak going straight. Worth the purchase
Shopper  how do i attach it to my iinflatable kayak?
JOHN B  the skeg has a hook incorporated into the design which attaches it to the back of the kayak. once you get it one it is very secure. highly recommend the skeg which significantly improves ability to manuever kayak in a somewhat straight line.
CHRIS N  with the air out it fits under the spray shield between the pontoons... then inflate and it is snug
CHARLES S  it just slips in on top and bottom once inflated if you look at back you will see a slit and it just slips on
MARTHA W  When the kayak is under- inflated simply hook the skeg through the cord at the rear of the boat. When the boat is fully inflated, the skeg will be held securely in place.
CRAIG L  loosen the back cover. slip skeg securely over edge of kayak. make sure the hook on the skeg is in the black rubber circle on the back of the kayak. definitely helps me stay in a straight course.
phil o  It goes in the back I does not help because it is out of the water most of the time.
CLAUDIA S  The directions provided with the skeg are spot on. One just needs to add some muscle as you maneuver the skeg horizontally into the aft top slot between the kayak hull and kayak skirt. Once attachment piece makes it through the tight quarters which assure the skeg does not wiggle or get loose, you can turn skeg vertical and the attachment crook will fit down into slot and the outer piece seen in the photo fits to the seaward aft.
BOB J  You have to untie the back skirt and slip the top half of the skeg in (so the rudder sticking out like in the picture). You need to take a little care when deflating and packing so it does snap. Trust me it will make the kayak run straight. The boat is pretty useless without the skeg.
