I would say more diving - and in lower temperatures- such as what we have here in south cal - winter 49-61F - something like that.
I don't see why they couldn't be worn to surf - but being 5mm the dexterity is not the same as -say 3mm
For surfing I would think just 3mm will be plenty ( and they do come in that flavor).
I just about trashed a pair- they lasted 2 years - many dives on them - not bad.

Don't know much about surfing. Bought them for diving in 60-70 degree water. Worked well for exposure of about 60 minutes at a time.

Diving, they are very thick...a bit too thick for surfing, try a 3mm glove instead.

It would depend on how cold the water is. We use ours for Canyoneering down waterfalls from snowmelt. They are fairly thick. We have lighter ones that we use for surfing and kayaking.
