Comments about The North Face VE-25 Expedition Tent:

I still have a VE-24 that I bought back when I was a mountain warfare instructor in the Marine Corps. I used it for years guiding and teaching mountaineering back when I was a pro member with AMGA. It is over 35 years old now and going strong. I am now a Scoutmaster and my sons are using the same tent.

I thought it was time for an upgrade, as the VE-24 fly has no real vestibule. Upgrading to the VE-25 is a no brainer; North Face is the standard when it comes to mountaineering tents... period!

Yes there are other good companies and I have several other tents as well; but North Face in my book is still the standard other tents are compared with.

The VE-24's two windows/snow holes are gone and are replaced with a second door on the back side of the tent. The doors are also redesigned to open to the side instead of toward the ground where you had to constantly remind everyone not to step on the door or no-see-um netting. The VE-25 and its fly provide better coverage than the older VE-24 and it seems to be stronger. Yes it is heavier but it is a little larger and the fly has a great vestibule. However, I did not list the weight as an issue because it is a "mountaineering" tent. Considering the conditions it is expected to hold up under and the fact that it is a three person tent (two people with all the equipment and breathing room), one person should not be carrying the whole thing.

The poles have been redesigned to fold down to a shorter length. Just as with the older VE-24 model, this tent also comes with a separate pole bag; this allows you to handoff those poles to be carried by a tent mate.

As far as condensation... The VE-25 does have vents at the top of the tent which the older VE-24 did not have. This does help to minimize condensate but what tent or fly doesn't have condensation collect on it at times? Carry a small sponge and wipe it down in the morning or in cold weather keep a hanging candle lantern lit (remember to ventilate to prevent CO building up)... problem solved.

If you are looking for a fair weather tent with minimal weight then don't get this tent and complain about its weight! Just buy a fair weather tent. But if you are looking for an extremely weather proof mountaineering tent or a true four season tent this is it! Yes it can be backpacked by sharing the load, or put it in a snow sled. (It is a 4 season tent so use it as such!)

If you are looking at this tent be patient, wait, and watch pricing as the economy fluctuates. This is a pricey tent but the price does go up and down. It is worth the money as it will last your life time and your kid's life time if properly taken care of. My purchase was about $200.oo off suggested retail through SunnySports.

To North Face... Thanks for a great product and maintaining your quality control over the years!

To SunnySports... Thanks for offering it at a competitive price! As my VE-24 is still going strong I have wavered over the years to upgrade; but your pricing is what help me to make the commitment to upgrade and we (my family) are enjoying it!

Comments about The North Face VE-25 Expedition Tent:

This is the Gold Standard of tents for winter camping in extreme conditions. It is heavy but that weight makes it substantial in heavy snowfall and gusting winds. If your life depends on your shelter holding up then this is an excellent choice. I like all the pockets in the tent walls to stash things off the floor and in easy reach. The roof vents work well to reduce condensation and help keep things dry inside. I am very happy with this purchase.
