I have an older model Hyvent jacket/parka, but it's really heavy and tends to hold a ton of moisture, especially after a deluge; then the coat stays wet for HOURS if not days before drip-drying. This new slicker came in handy this past week when we were camping and got caught in a couple downbursts followed by a steady drizzle... with a couple light layers underneath, I stayed outside, securing a rain-awning, and then reading my Kindle under a tarp until dark...I could feel the cold wet chair... through my back, but my skin and clothes were bone-dry! So light and easily packable! Love the orange color, which will come in handy in the Spring and Fall when hiking in areas where deer hunters like to do their thing...I found the lack of a chest pocket a bit off-putting, but the side pockets are actually huge (as they can be used for packing the coat), and could hold a large Nalgene or 20-oz tall boy brewski. Nice price, as well.
A no brainer if you're looking for a mid-weight jacket.

Classic TNF. A little boxy at first, however it breaks in easy, provided you wear it a lot. I work in DC so it's a great coat for commuting to work on the metro on a rainy day. A great mid-weight piece of kit.

The Resolve jacket is a thin rain jacket that protects from wind and rain very well. I wear a fleece underneath during cold weather that way I can wear it year round. I don't know anything about the venture jacket.

The jacket is wonderful for keeping you dry but does not protect you from the cold.

It would be good as a medium portable shell, if you had a good warmth layer on underneath. It is not Gortex, so it will not perform as a my Northface Gortex shell would. I also used it on a rainy day at my kids swim meet, and it started to get too wet...it repelled water for a while, but is not the same as a Gortex jacket. It is also great for day pack, mountain bike ride, desert dirt bike ride. I really like the hood and the zip up collar which has some polar tech on it, and is great for those windy days.
