WhisperLite Universal Stove

The MSR WhisperLite Universal is an ideal multi-fuel stove for backpacking in the mountains or woods. It can run on IsoPro canisters, white gasoline, unleaded automobile gasoline, and kerosene. It comes with three different fuel jets of varying hole diameters to accommodate the fuels types. The ideal fuel for me is the MSR 80/20 blend of isobutane and propane (IsoPro) found in canisters. You simply screw on the canister and turn on the gas valve and light the gas, and you have the convenience of an instant flame. When the stove has been burning with a blue flame for about 3 minutes, the canister can be inverted to prevent the IsoPro blend in the canister from stalling out because of freezing weather. The inverted canister feeds the liquid mixture in the canister directly to the hot burner of the stove and can operate like this in outdoor temperatures ranging from about 0? F to -20? F. The baffled type burner of the WhisperLite Universal distributes the flame evenly to the bottom of cooking utensils and facilitates simmering of various food concoctions, and it is also comparatively quiet when compared to other backpacking stoves that use a “Y” shaped roarer type burner with a flame spreader on top. The WhisperLite Universal stove can boil one liter of water in a conventional covered aluminum pot in about 3 to 4 minutes, depending on the climate, altitude, and ambient temperature. The use of liquid fuels, however, requires some practice to produce a hot flame for cooking. Essentially this requires filling the fuel bottle with the liquid fuel, pressurizing the bottle with the included pump, and producing a volatile gas by priming. Priming merely changes the liquid fuel to a gas when it comes into contact with the heated fuel-line loop near the burner. The actual priming process involves releasing about one teaspoon of liquid fuel from the pressurized fuel bottle to the cup below the burner where it is ignited with a match or lighter. When the priming fuel is nearly extinguished, a gradual release of more fuel from the fuel bottle results in a blue flame. You are now ready to cook when this happens. The WhisperLite Universal, like contemporary MSR stoves, utilizes a weighted internal cleaning needle to remove soot build-up in the jet orifice inside the burner. You merely turn the stove upside down and shake vigorously. The internal needle pushes out any obstructive carbon build-up. Other stoves manufacturers solve this problem by supplying a manual cleaning needle that you must periodically poke into the jet orifice from the outside to remove carbon deposits. The MRS shaker jet cleaner is a better way of removing carbon from the burner jet orifice because these deposits are pushed out and not inside of the jet, which can collect over time and necessitate an overhaul of the stove. The WhisperLite Universal should function well with yearly maintenance. The stove and fuel pump weighs about 12 to 13 ounces and fits into most cooking pots made for two or more people. It does not come with an MSR fuel bottle, however, which you must use to operate this stove in liquid fuel mode. The packaged stove includes directions, plastic stand for inverting the fuel canister in cold weather, windscreen, heat reflector, small-parts kit, and storage sack. If you liked the WhisperLite series of stoves manufactured by MSR, you would like the multi-fuel WhisperLite Universal stove.
