We haven’t had a chance to use the new backpacks but on inspection they are laid out well and both fit as expected.

Brought the pack for backpacking. Used it twice this season. Great compartments. Wish it had side pockets on the waist support, but other than that it’s a great sack. Holds all my gear and feels comfortable on the body.

I love my Kelly pack and fanny pack! They have a great amount of storage and they’re so light by themselves. My Redwing has so much space and padding. I could wear it for days. I’m so happy I finally bought some Kelly products.

I bought this backpack for day hikes. I didn’t end up doing research on how big a day hiking bag should be until after I ordered. I was a little nervous that the bag would be a bit of an overkill for my needs due to things I had read online. Although this is I believe technically an overnight/weekend bag, I am happy to say it works just as great for day hikes! I am 5’2 with a 17 inch torso and after adjusting the straps a little It fit me perfectly. The color is beautiful and the bag was so smartly designed. It is great for carrying my camera equipment. It is very comfortable. I used it for a 6 mile hike this past weekend in the mountains and I hardly even noticed I was carrying a bag on my back! Great support and very light. I highly recommend this bag and am extremely happy with my purchase. So happy I didn’t get an overpriced osprey!

I was very excited when I got this in the mail and did a three mile trek that day, the next day I did 9 mile trek with weight. This pack adjusted perfectly for comfort, I’ve used packs before that weren’t comfortable and thought that was how it was supposed to be. I ordered a female specific one, with hopes it’d fit better and not hurt after carrying it around, it did not disappoint. I am 5’6” and have a muscular, stocky build. The hip belt sat nicely on my hips, the shoulder straps didn’t dig into my armpits, the pack was not resting on my neck, the chest strap was at a perfect level, it didn’t attempt to cross over my breast. The sweat ventilation is a nice feature and adds nice cushion. When it was all cinched down, it fit snuggle against my back and didn’t move. Happy with my purchase.

Exactly as expected. I watched the video overview of the back pack beforehand to get a good look at the fit and size and it’s exactly as I thought it would be. Have yet to test it out but I’m very excited to.

I originally tried the Redwing 50 but found it very large and the fit was not that great for me (5’4” female). I loved the layout and pockets of the bag though so I decided to order the woman specific Redwing 40 and I love it! It fits my body great and there is plenty of room to store everything I need.

I was looking for a decently-priced backpack for traveling before my study abroad program to Costa Rica this spring. This backpack was great. I love the color (I got the turquoise) and it was perfect for program excursions or weekend trips with friends far away from San Jose. You can fit a lot of stuff in here if you pack it right, optimizing the spaces, folding clothes well and use all the little outside pockets to you advantage. This back is also super comfortable and does a great job keeping the weight off your shoulders when you have it strapped around your hips. This was honestly a great buy for traveling especially because in a country with bad roads and poor sidewalks, the wheels of your luggage would be destroyed haha I can't wait to use it for cabin trips and many more adventures! :)

The fit is perfect for a woman and really comfortable. I love the clamshell opening- easy access to everything. Narrow profile is perfect for plane carry-on too.

Perfect fit! This bag is everything I was hoping for and then some. My husband got it for me as a birthday gift and i LOVE it!!! Very comfortable, easily adjustable, and lots of organization and space throughout the bag. I got the deep lake color and it's amazing. Will definitely be buying from Kelty. Thank you for an amazing product and for the thought put into it for the opposite sex lol.

I bought the Women's Redwing 40 for day hiking, heavy-duty-birding, wildlife biology and wildlife art field work, and for travel. It is a great choice for me. I have done all of those things in the past 6 weeks (hiking, birding, field biology, sketching and foreign travel via airplane and train). Number ONE over other packs, it has a really great padded waistband that is comfortable for heavy loads on hiking trails (the waist band cinches down for overheads and airplanes). I like the easy to reach water-bottle pockets and also use them for field guides and journal storage, so I can hike but not carry things in my hands until needed. The pocket behind the head was very useful for quick reach snacks, sunglasses, hats and for getting keys out quickly, all without taking off the pack. I also like the cubbyhole behind the outside pocket, I stored coats and vests in that spot, as I traveled on trains. The full zip to access the main bag from different angles was quite helpful when my bag was full and I just wanted something inside, I could get in there quickly. The main bag could be cinched down flatter or expanded to hold a tremendous amount. The two outer side pockets held my first aid kit and my cold weather hat and gloves. The padded pocket for the laptop/water bladder bag, I used for my optics: spotting scope & binoculars and electronics when traveling via airplane, I don't want to check those, so they need to be in carry-on, it is perfect for that. The main outer pocket has a padded inner pocket that fits my sketchbook for recording wildlife observations "in place". The only negative for me, was the pack is top heavy and would continuously flop over when I propped it vertical. It does have a handle on the outer bag, so I suppose it was designed that way. I will just adjust how to use it and prop it differently. I have the turquoise color, which is a bit bright for me. I liked my old Kelty's navy color, but this new bag, I wanted it to be seen better as I'm using it for travel as well as field work. I do get compliments about the color and the pack, that is nice to hear.

Really can not rate this yet. Have not used it. However, I like the look and feel of this sleeping bag. It rolls very easily to put back in the cinch sack. Will be using this on a hiking trip this summer.

This was so so close to being perfect. I love the women thought design and the U shapes open but there’s no sleeping bag /shoe compartment in the bottom

overall, great experience. Cost was relatively acceptable given the versatility, but durability - i've only had a few weeks so not sure it's applicable to rate entirely b/c the cost (this is on a pricier side for someone who doesn't 'backpack/hike' etc.) is important vs durability. tons of functional pockets, VERY Light weight which is great. i think it holds a good amount too.

This design of the Women's Redwing 40 fits me way better than the previous design. I am 5'-0" with a small torso and this backpack fits me perfect, the previous felt too bulky. Very comfortable on long hikes and meets my needs for SAR. The side compartments are smaller than the previous but all the other features are great! I have been using Kelty backpacks since high school and throughout college, and now for SAR! Thank you Kelty for having a great design for women, especially those who are on the short end!

This bag is the perfect size for field work in remote areas. It can carry everything I need for a days work. The quality of the material helps keep items inside somewhat dry in the wet forest of Hawaii, but I just put a garbage bag inside to ensure dryness. The mesh pockets on the side get ripped up by the forest that also carries my machete. The hydration pack pocket is perfect to separate from sharp objects inside my bag. I had a rat chew through my last one, hoping that the material could be a little thicker someday although I understand cutting weight is also important. I'd sacrifice a little added weight for more durable material. Thanks Kelty!

I bought this for my PC experience. Overall, I like the bag. I like the back, the pockets, and loading versatility. The various loops are handy when carrying gear and the pockets are great for traveling. It’s possible for everyday though I think people think I look funny carrying a big backpack, haha. What would be helpful is a sort of mini manual explaining the different straps and instructions on how to remove the waist belt. The waist belt is hard to remove and then re-attach, so there could be serious improvement there. Also, maybe because I’m smaller framed, straps seem hang and dangle more than I would like. I’m not sure, if there is a way to be able to retract or hide straps away, then I wouldn’t be worried about them getting caught in something or getting too dirty and then getting me dirty by proximity.

I did a lot of research before purchasing this backpack. I was looking for a pack that would work as a carry on for international travel. It need to be comfortable, have enough pockets, easily accessible main pocket and durable. This pack met all of my requirements. I used it as a carry on for a 2 week trip to South Korea. I also had 1 checked bag that I shared with another person. I did multiple side trips of 2-3 nights using just this bag. It's spacious enough to carry all my supplies that I needed. No problem using it as a carry on. I was able to divide up everything in all the pockets. It is very comfortable to wear. For travel purposes I removed the hip belt. I would've kept it on if there were pockets in the hip belt, but there are none (which is about the only downside I can come up with for this pack). I typically lean away from bright colors, but for some reason the previous reviews commented on how nice the deep lake color was so I chose it, and I am happy that I did. It stands out a little, but it's not obnoxious. Since I purchased it I have also used it for several weekend trips with no problem at all. For sizing purposes I am 5'3 and 155lbs.

This pack is amazing! I’m 5’10” 175lbs (with a short torso and narrow shoulders), this pack is by far the most comfortable pack I’ve ever worn! It has an incredible amount of adjustments. No matter how full or empty my pack is, I never feel unbalanced. When going on week long backpacking trips, my boyfriend’s daughter wears this pack (as I need a bigger 60-70 liter pack)... she is 5’1” and 120 lbs, and I can adjust it perfectly for her! That’s a large range of adjustments! I have fibromyalgia (and a congenital spinal fusion in my neck) and cannot tolerate hardly ANY pressure on my shoulders/neck (not even a standard halter bikini).... normally that means I have extreme difficulty wearing a backpack. If it doesn’t have hip straps, it’s not even an option for me. This pack puts the weight so fully on the hip straps that I’m not even in a rush to take my pack off after a LONG day of hiking!!! Half the time my boyfriend is reminding me to take it off, because I’m comfortable in it. EVEN FULLY LOADED! If you have difficulty wearing shoulder straps, then I highly recommend this pack! The hip straps are very comfortable and adjustable! Attempting to think of any feature I’d change or add: Pockets in the hip straps? That’d be cool, but it’s not absolutely necessary as I can easily reach a variety of pockets without taking my pack off.

I bought this bag to triple as a carry-on weekender / short backpacking trip / climbing pack. For backpacking, it's perfect if you're traveling with a friend and are sharing gear so one person doesn't need to lug everything. I'm not the most minimalist backpacker and don't think I could fit much more than a 20F sleeping bag, tent/hammock, pad, and cookware. I love this pack for sport climbing and am happily resisting the desire to purchase a separate climbing pack. I pack the tarp, draws, rain gear, shoes, and food in the main compartment; cord and ATCs in the side pockets; and more snacks in the front and top pockets. My rope is strapped securely in the stash pocket, helmet sits nicely on the flat top, and the hidden daisy chain straps are nifty for airing out shoes and loose carabiners. The water bottle pockets are large enough for my 50 oz bottle and reinforced with adjustable straps. This pack is lightweight, thoughtfully designed, durable, and the all black option is sexy. The ONLY thing I'm questioning is whether the men's version would fit me better personally. I'm 5' 7", 130 lb. with a pretty long torso and I find myself wishing the pack panel was just an inch or so longer as the hip pads are creeping up towards my waist rather than sitting on my hip.

It works for photographers, too!
By Amy P.
I bought several Kelty backpacks for a trip last year to New Zealand and this Redwing 40 for women is the one I used the most. My biggest problem traveling as a photographer is to find an actual camera bag that'll double for a good, solid backpack, but most camera backpacks are designed to carry camera gear and not much else. With the Kelty, I was able to stash my gear in the lower part of the pack using "baskets" or cushions from a different photo bag and the rest of my hiking supplies close...
