Comments about Kelty Light Year 0F 650-fill Down Sleeping Bag - Regular Size:

I recently purchased this bag because I had an older -20 North Face synthetic bag that was too heavy as well as an REI +15 degree synthetic bag that was not warm enough. I was looking for the best down-filled bag I could find at the most affordable price. This sleeping bag hits it out of the park on those two criteria by a mile!I am a little OCD about product research. I, like many I know, want to ensure that I am getting the highest quality item I can afford that will last a long time. The light year 0 degree is a fantastic sleeping bag!Be aware, it is not the lightest down bag out there. [...] I weighed it at home when I first got it out of the packaging in nothing more than its stuff sack (no tags or anything) and it is true to manufacturer's listed weight of 3 lbs. 13oz. So there are certainly lighter down bags out there, but you will pay a twice as much or more for them, in many cases more than 3 times as much. For a 650 fill power down bag, there is no comparison at this price point. With all of that said I would like to comment on many of the specific elements that were considerations in my decision-making process: warmth, comfortable room when zipped all the way up, non-snagging zipper, loft, compressibility and weight. The loft of this bag is amazing. Right out of the box this thing turned into a fluffy marshmallow (which is what you want in a cold weather bag by the way.) I measure it at 7.5'' high along the lower 3/4 of the bag and over 8'' of loft at the collar. This is not an exaggeration at all. I am 5'10'', 185lbs. This bag is very warm and comfortable for an average man down to around 6 degrees Fahrenheit. The EN ratings are available on the manufacturer's site. The compressibility is not as small as I had hoped. The listed dimensions of 8'' x 17'' are accurate. So don't think that this bag is going to pack down to the size of a Nalgene bottle. It doesn't. Also, as I mentioned before, it is a tad on the heavy side. I saw a number of internet resources that had the weight listed closer to the 3 lb. mark, and that was not the case. It is just under 4 lbs. So not too heavy, but not as light as I was hoping.Size. Some had listed at this bag was a bit snug in the shoulders, but I do not find that to be the case. At 62'' shoulder girth it is basically the same, if not slightly bigger than all other high quality bags I looked at. If you have particularly broad shoulders or are much larger than 200 lbs., you may want to look at the long version which will give you 2 more inches in the shoulders.I have had no issues with the zipper snagging at all. I know that can be a source of irritation for a lot of people, especially when it is dark in the tent and you are cold. Now with that said, with any sleeping bag that I have used that has a puffy down-filled draft tube (which this bag has) you have to make sure that it is out of the way when you zip. To me, that should be common knowledge. All in all, this is a phenomenal bag at this price-point. I gave it 5 out of 5 stars for it's price-point alone. When compared to SIGNIFICANLTY more expensive bags that use a higher quality down fill (i.e. 800-850 fill power down) I would rate it 4 out of 5 simply because it is slightly heavier and not quite as compressible. The craftsmanship is very high quality and it has a lifetime guarantee. So if you don't mind a tiny bit of extra weight you can easily save yourself 300+ dollars with this fantastic sleeping bag. There isn't much else to say really. I would definitely recommend this bag to anyone of average build who wants to be snugly warm in the winter while camping/backpacking!
