I wouldn't call myself a pro hiker but after being in the ARMY for 5 plus years I totally understand the importance of a good pack. This pack has enough space for a few days worth of food and supplies, depending on how you pack. The only complaint I have is that the sleeping bag compartment doesn't open wide enough for my sleeping bag, but I do have a abnormally larger sleeping system.

This bag is not good for someone who is under 67inches and has a waist under 33inches. Make sure you measure properly when buying a pack, if not you will regret it!!

All in all it is a great pack and a GREAT price...

This pack has many bells and whistles like nice big side pockets, double spindrift collar, top loading, front and bottom access points, cell phone/mp3 pocket, built it rain cover, ice axe loops etc...... The bottom line however is that it can't handle 75 liters worth of weight because the stays are super weak and it doesn't have a frame sheet. If you stuff this pack tight the stays will deform and cause the pack to bulge out in the middle of your back. This causes the pack to roll around on your back. Totally unacceptable. A pack this large must have a framesheet. It's probably good for loads up to 25lbs. or so and then only if you don't try to stuff the main compartment full. I sent it back and bought a Kelty Coyote 80. Far far superior pack for a little extra money.

Quality craftsmanship and durable. Outer pockets are great. Top load or front access are very convenient. Super comfy. If your not so shallow that you need to spend a lot more for a name, then this is the bag for you. Large capacity for multi-day hikes.

Comments about High Sierra Appalachian 75 Backpack:

I have used this pack for 3-7 day hikes in multiple trips to Big Bend Natl Park and twice across the Grand Canyon plus others. It might weigh 1 to 1.5 lbs more than some other bags, but the materials used are Tuff, I fill this bag up throw it down, use it for a seat - pillow, backrest on breaks, and it handles it all and doesn't really show any wear from this abuse. I find the bag comfortable up to 45 lbs - then it just depends on how well you distribute the weight. Using the external pockets I can carry 1 litre on each side up high and 1 in each quick access mesh pocket for 4 litres just on the outside of the bag - great for us Desert hikers. The sleeping bag fits well in it's compartment, and with a weeks load of food, stove, cooking pot, couple changes of clothes / jacket I can still put my 2 person Tent on the inside of the bag for a clean stable pack. I have a 34" waist and the waist belt is cinched down pretty close to max - but it is strong and works. the straps stay put and adjustment is simple. For the price, durability, looks - I think this is a fantastic bag. I also enjoy the attached rain fly hiding under the bottom in it's velcro'd enclosure. I use it when I utilize a bivy sack on solo trips - and the bag is outdoors overnight exposed to the elements. Sure there are lighter bags - made of much thinner material and handle lighter loads, but I appreciate how tuff and durable this bag is - I depend on it for everything while I'm out getting lost on purpose :). IF your ego doesn't require a high dollar "uber" bag -- this is the real deal.. Happy Trails !!

Comments about High Sierra Appalachian 75 Backpack:

I really like the front access to bag. Sometimes it's nice to be able to get to items at the bottom without digging from the top. Or even loading it is easier to load from front. I have no problem loading my sleeping bag in bag compartment. I have a 20 degree bag and a 45 degree bag that takes no space. I really like the external pockets for small easy to get at items. The only drawback is the weight. For the money it's a great buy but a couple pounds lighter would be great.

Comments about High Sierra Appalachian 75 Backpack:

This backpack is great. It's comfortable with lots of positioning adjustments. I'm 5'11" and 225 and this fit fine.
It has lots of pull straps to keep it tight and compact. Lots of loops for carabiners or bungees.
I just took it 3 days and 30 miles with plenty of room for gear. But I pack more cozy than minimalist.
    Zippers are sturdy.
