Questions about this item:
Why Did You Choose This?
FRANK M The light spreads in an odd manner because the lights housing has two support beams on both ends. These beams cause a magnifying effect in some areas of the light. The beams are not an additional peace of plastic but rather part of the structure itself. BUT this is still an AWESOME little lantern!!! I got 4 of them. They are super bright, and the fact that they run on one of the most common, inexpensive, and easy to carry batteries (AA) is an extra plus. I highly recommend this light.
what color do these come in?
the listing says varies.....
KENNETH A I believe the only color available is black. I don't recall seeing any choices for colors. Ken
FRANK M i believe the exponent only comes in black. coleman used to make a similar LED lantern in different colors, but since they started making the Exponent, I no longer find the other ones anywhere. the light spreads in an odd manner but Its still a pretty good lantern. i got two for myself, one for my parents home and one for my brother. that's how much i like these lanterns
ANDREW S Mine is black just like in photo
SAMUEL W The lantern we bought was red. Its a clever design and works well. We were not interested in a color when we bought it. We wanted a practical and useful light for camping.
Does this provide enough light for setting up a tent in the dark? I really need to see what I am doing as I only set it up once a year.
JACK S Plenty of light! I use it hiking when building a camp fire is difficult. Rain\night hikes. You wont regret it!!
I think this lantern probably would work for setting up your tent but I would recommend using a headlamp instead or in addition to the lantern. That way your hands are free and whatever you are working on is illuminated. I hope this helps.
Christopher S That's a good idea - thanks.
I've never attempted to set up the tent using the Coleman Exponent Pack-Away lantern, however it does provide a lot of light inside the tent- more than necessary. I would expect in pitch darkness there would be a lot of shadows making it difficult to see, however, I believe it would be possible. Hope that gives you some insight into your question. Ken
Christopher S thanks Kenneth
Yes, it provides good lighting but you will have to move it around with you as you set up the tent. It is an excellent light. I highly recommend.
Christopher S With the expectation you provided, I think it might work for my purposes. thanks!
No it does not. It is a handy lantern for doing things inside a small tent but does not provide any useful light for outdoor open type activities. If you are looking for that kind of light source I strongly recommend a one or two mantle propane lantern.
Christopher S Thanks Richard! I had hoped to get away with a smaller light, but it looks like I will need more. Do you think the Coleman 8D Twin Spiral Camping Lantern would be a better choice?
RICHARD E Its possible, I don't have any personal experience with that lantern so I can't say for sure. I know that it would certainly be much closer to what you're looking for than the pack-away. The pack-away is just slightly bigger than a pack of cigarettes so it doesn't stand much chance. The 8D is bigger with a much larger power source and thus should be better suited to your needs. However, I seriously doubt there are any battery powered lanterns that will match a decent propane lantern. To me, the weight becomes an issue (since I do a lot of backpacking) and I would rather carry a can of propane that I can use for several different things than a battery lantern that weighs more and has only one use. IMHO
Christopher S Thanks for the detail and suggestion - I really appreciate it!
