I'm a photographer in my mid-60s with two artificial knees. I still get around OK, but do a fair amount of hiking with a medium 15-20 pound backpack and tripod to get to shooting locations in the Blue Ridge Mountains. After using a single pole for several years, I felt it time to go with two poles to take the pressure off my knees and aid with balance on rocky trails in steep terrain. I was looking for light and strong poles that would either fit in, or on, my backpack when not in use.
I purchased several sets of poles to try out at home. I was leaning heavily towards the Leki Micro Vario Ti's (Cor-Tec and Carbon) because of the light weight, packability and comfortable grips. I also tried out the Black Diamond FLZ poles, but didn't like the small foam grips and general flimsiness. I might have gone with the Micro Vario Carbons, but the tag that came on both the aluminum and carbon micro-vario poles from Leki recommended that large and/or heavy users use a conventional 3-section pole, which would be expected to have more reserve strength. I was surprised to see this, because I really researched the poles before buying them and did not see this stated anywhere. In light of Leki's apparent lack of confidence in their folding poles, and the fact that I might occasionally have to put a lot of weight on them (5'11" and 250 lbs), I started looking for a set of light 3-section telescoping poles that collapsed to a relatively short length.
The Black Diamond Alpine Cork poles fit all my requirements. They weigh about 17 ounces, and even though they are carbon I've read reviews that said they were as strong and durable as equivalent aluminum poles that were four ounces heavier. The compressed 25" length works well for my backpack, the locks are highly rated and I really like the cork handles. They have a subtle tackiness, unlike the Leki Cor-Tecs that were very slippery. Also, while I typically don't use straps, I've found the BDAC straps to be very comfortable.
