Types of snowshoes

There are a few different types of snowshoes to choose from. Each variety is ideal for slightly different uses and conditions.

Flat terrain snowshoes are the simplest type, and they’re designed for more casual or inexperienced snowshoers. They often have a lower price tag and are easy to take off and put on.

Rolling terrain snowshoes work well in both flat terrain and in areas with a moderate slope. They often include crampons for extra traction on hills and a heel lift for improved balance on uneven terrain.

You can wear mountain-terrain snowshoes in much steeper or icier conditions. They are more expensive, but they have a rugged crampon system and you can wear them with heavy boots. Plus, they usually include heel lifts.

Running snowshoes are much more lightweight than other varieties. They’re typically worn by those who want to maintain a faster speed for a more intense workout.

Snowshoes have come a long way in the past two decades. In the past, most models were very simple and made of wood or wicker. But today they feature strong, yet lightweight, metal alloys and useful features to support your feet, help you glide comfortably, and protect you in deeper snow.
