Our application is probably a little different from others...We have a 1991 VW Westfalia Camper. The upstairs loft bed has original foam, which is not that comfortable to sleep on. We have tried to lug a memory foam mattress with us to put on top of the original mattress, but that is big, bulky, and frankly not really any more comfortable, as there is still no firm foundation. These two mattresses fit great on top of the stock mattress...and do indeed add to a better night sleep.

Since we also have backpacking gear and have smaller, lighter Thermorests we use for that sport, I would not consider these if one is looking to be a minimalist and use these for backpacking. In fact for me, I don't even know if they would fit the footprint of our backpacking tent.

As far as being blems...who cares....works just fine....a little blem is absolutely no big deal- one had a yellow stain smaller than the size of a dime on the pad, the other had some glue overrun on the valve area....

The come shipped in Thermorest packaging, only difference is they have a little stamp on the pad that that says irregular...again...who cares.

I got this Thermarest Base Camp mattress that was listed as having cosmetic imperfections. When I opened it, it was listed as being too narrow, or something. That's not a cosmetic imperfection. But I can't seem to see any problem with it. The width looks as listed. I think the listed narrowness is 20".It sleeps well, even when only automatically inflated. One user mentioned that it doesn't automatically inflate. It does. It takes 5-10 minutes. Then you can inflate it fully by mouth, with a few breaths.Not sure all the benefits of this mattress vs. an air mattress. This one simply may be optimized for narrowness and weight. I'm not backpacking so I do not know much about the benefits. It may be warmer than an airmattress. I'm happy with this product, at the price I bought it ([$]). (The width is wide enough for a broad-shouldered, 240 LB, 6" person.)The model has an ink stamp saying, "Imperfect" or something on it. Interestingly THAT would be a cosmetic imperfection. It's on the top surface, but it does not bother me.

It was time to move up from a Air Mattress. I was so tired of waking up at 3 am to reinflate the mattress. This worked like a charm. I only tent camp with the family and scouts. I do not know if you would want the weight for backpacking but that is not it's purpose. I did not feel like I bottomed out and slept great. I guess I will be buying more cause the kid are fighting over them. The blemishes are minor...don't let that stop you from the low price.
