Shopper Is the tent self standind?
NADINE B I was wrong--it is not free standing--it needs to be staked.
NADINE B I don't know how long ago you asked this. Yes this tent is self standing. I absolutely loved using this tent when backpacking. It is light and I cannot carry much weight anymore. It set up easily and in very little space. It was very solid in substantial winds (well staked down and sometimes I tied the peak, too), and performed well in rain. I loved being able to see out through so much mesh, if I didn't put the fly on, and how easy the fly went on in the middle of the night. The Jake's foot is dynamite!!!
JANA C This tent is not classified as stand alone. However it only requires staking down the floor to stand up not guy lines as some tents do. I have used this many times without the rain fly or any other supports and it has performed well.
THOMAS H No, the tent requires one stake at each end and the fly needs one stake to hold the vestibule out. Wonderful tent though! I love the ability to do the fast pitch where you just take the fly, the poles, and the floor.
MARK W Assuming you mean free-standing (rigid without staking), no it is not. You stake it out then put the poles up.
I am very pleased with my tent, I've backpacked Yosemite, canoed in Maine plus numerous local trips. It has held up with no signs of wear. I always carry a 9X9 fly and if it is raining I set the tent up under the fly then move the fly to where it is needed.
TODD P No the lightyear needs a stake out line at the head and foot. It is not free standing.
JOHN L No, this is not a free-standing tent. In other words, you need to stake it out for it to be errected.
ROLLIN B This tent is not self standing but nevertheless it is an awesome tent.
I use it for bicycle camping.
DALE A This tent is not self-standing. It needs a minimum of (going from memory) about six stakes to get it to stand up. It only has two aluminum hoops, without stakes to hold the corners of the tent in place and stretch the fabric tight the hoops will tip over.
When properly staked, this tent can endure fairly heavy winds and storms.
JONATHAN P No, it is held down with 6 stakes, then a 7th for the vestibule
Mike R No it is not a self standing tent.
You string the head and foot pole loops through the body of the tent while laying flat then stretch out and steak the end and sides. you also have guy strings to use in high wind situations that I never needed.
Tent is light enough for a thru hiker or minimal weight camper.

I ended up selling mine as it looked long enough on the foot print dimensions but hard to fit someone 6'6" laying down.
The Golite Eden 1 turned out to be my best option for space and shelter
DAWN B Hi-
No this tent is not self standing. It does require anchors at the front & back to provide tension in the tent to locate the two poles. These were not hard to set and I found the tent to be very secure, none the less.
CATHRYN W No, it's not a free-standing tent, but staking out the head and toe is all that's necessary.
DANIEL E The tent is not self standing. It has too "hoop" poles that give the tent shape but it requires stakes at the head and foot to hold tension on the hoops to keep the tent standing.
TERRY C This tent is not free standing. great solo tent tho.
SCOTT H It is NOT a self standing tent. It requires stakes to stay up!
GREGORY P No, it must be staked out.
