Questions & Answers

Questions about this item:

Shopper  How much does it weigh in ounces?
DIANA K  Weight: 0lbs 11oz (311.8g)
SHANNON C  Fabric breathes? Hood detachable?
RUSSELL K  The hood is not detachable but it rolls up and stores out of the way in the collar. As for breathing, all things are relative and you need to have realistic expectations. By definition, if it's raining you are in a high humidity environment. If you are walking up or down a mountain with a pack on, your body is working. You will sweat. And evaporation doesn't happen very quickly in a high humidity environment. I'm a 215 lb guy and I sweat like a horse. There is no technology outside of an air conditioned room that would keep me dry hiking in a 65 deg F rain. With that said, the Precip jacket does all the right stuff. It utilizes a permeable barrier that by all accounts is one of the best 2.5 layer barriers on the market. It also provides large pit zips to get air flowing in / out of the jacket. The pit zips help a lot. Lastly, the pockets are mesh lined so you can unzip them for additional air flow. If I'm hiking in a rain, the pit zips and pockets are open. On the other hand, if you're just walking around camp in the rain or running errands around home on a weekend, the Precip jacket breathes well enough to keep it from getting clammy inside. And this explanation applies to EVERY piece of rain gear on the market using ANY fabric. Yes current fabrics breathe. NO, they can't alter biology or physics. They ALL reach their limits to move moisture pretty quickly in high humidity conditions. So when I bought the Precip I was focused on price, fit, weight, features, water repellency, and durability knowing that breathability is partially marketing hype.
Richard O  hood is not detachable but stows nicely in collar....breathes okay (even gortex does not breathe completly)....sheds water very well
Hiep T  The hood is not detachable. The fabric does not breath well. It does keep the rain out however. We were caught in a heavy downpour, and I was dry wearing the Marmoit PreCip.
Paul P  Fabric breathes nicely. Hood is not detachable.
Shopper  Does it wrinkle easily? Or does it look 'smooth' (like a trench coat, for example) after unpacking from the hood pouch?
RUSSELL K  It will wrinkle. When you first pull it out of the storage pocket it will look like it was in a storage pocket. The good news is that after a day on a hanger or a few hours of wearing it in the rain, most of the wrinkle disappear on their own. In my mind that's about all you can expect and pretty low maintenance.
Stephanie C  I've stuffed mine in a backpack several times and it always unwrinkles.
Robert K  Not as wrinkly as I thought it would be. No wrinkles for me but I hang mine up rather than stuffing it.
RUSSELL K  If you leave it scrunched up in its carry pouch it will come out wrinkled. But the wrinkles shake out pretty quickly. And to be honest, I care less about wrinkles and more about staying warm and dry in a downpour on the trail.
CHRISTOPHER B  Neither - it behaves like a windbreaker. It is ripstop nylon on the outside and a water repellent liner on the inside. I have had it stuffed in a backpack a couple of times and it comes out looking nice although I wouldn't say it is smooth like a trench coat. It is as smooth as if you stuffed a normal windbreaker in a pack.
Michael D K  I unrolled it this morning from my fanny pack during a hike. It has a few wrinkles. I love the rain jacket. I have bought two-- lost the first one and just had to replace it!!
