Bought this jacket for a 7 day paddling trip on the St. John River, Maine. Rained everyday and I stayed completely dry. Even in heavy downpours.

I like this jacket a lot. It kept me dry in lower and arctic sweden. Reviews that say it fits trim are correct as it was snug over the layers that I applied for -10F weather. I am very satisfied with this purchase.
Marmot Minimalist Jacket for Men The Marmot Minimalist Jacket for Men is a good buy if you want to cut the luggage bulk on your winter travels. Thanks to the GORE-TEX Paclite material used in its construction, this jacket helps you stay dry even when heading out into rainy weather. Add to this a water-resistant zipper and you are assured moisture does not seep inside the jacket through the journey. With the storm-flap over the zipper with a snap/hook and loop closure, you get a secure cover in windy conditions, too. Due to its 100% polyester construction, this jacket offers superior durability. It features Angel-Wing movement that allows you a greater range of motion in your arms without the garment riding up at the waist. With an elastic draw-cord hem, this jacket gives you a closer fit to keep the cold at bay. Take your outings into the great outdoors comfortably with the Marmot Minimalist Jacket for Men!

My chest size is 38". Seems should go for size S according to the size chart. Does the size chart/ jacket design include allowance for wearing of mid and /or base layers beneath the jacket?

HI - Great jacket - I would recommend getting a medium. I'm 5'7" about a 38' chest and that what I have. Used it with and without base layers.

I have a 40" chest 190lbs and 6' 1" tall. I bought the medium size. It is a perfect fit if you wear a thinner thermal layer under the coat, but if your wearing something thicker like a sweatshirt and more underlayers or really puffy coat, it may be tight. The chest is probably ok, it's the arms that will be tight on you. This coat is great!

By the chart I was between XL & XXL I opted for the XXL and there is plenty of room for layering

I am 6 ft., 145 lbs with a similar chest size. I bought the large for room for layers underneath in the winter and it is OK without layers, just a little loose. the cuff closures will take up any extra length in the arms and the bottom snugs up tight with the elastic pulls.

I think so yes, as long as it's not too bulky you should be fine

Hi, I'm 5'7 &150 pounds and would like to have a lightweight down jacket underneath. Which size, S or M, would be fitted? Thanks.
