Is this jacket warm enough for Midwest winters? It appears to be very thin/light-weight.
Julie G
Yes, keeps me warm in Maine!

It is very light weight, but it was warm enough for me (I usually am warmer than most people) to handle the Minnesota winter last year.

Hi, I purchased this jacket a year ago and I love it as an under layer when backpacking. I wear it under another another, more roomy jacket for extra warmth at high elevations. I do not think it is warm enough for an outer jacket in cold climates, plus the outer fabric may not hold up well as an outer garment. However, as a down sweater it is great.

On it's own, I'd say no. It's a great layer, and warm enough on its own down to about freezing.

Love my Ghost Whisperer- I wore it all last winter in New Jersey and we had a cold snowy winter. I wear it as outerwear on a moderately cold day (as low as 25-30 degrees). In colder conditions I add a shell (Gortex) over it and am cozy as can be. The lightness makes it easy to layer under and over it. My Ghost Whisperer was a crucial layer to the top of Mt. Kilimanjaro in 2013! In fact, most of the women in our group had the same jacket!

I live in San Diego where our winters are mild. I love the jacket because it's lightweight and compact, but I would suggest using it under a heavier coat to keep you warm. Hope this helps.

It is fairly thin, here in New England, I use it as a 50s into upper 20s F jacket. I wear it from October into June in Maine. You can also wear it as liner with a windbreaker shell over or under. In fact, Patagonia call their similar jacket "down sweater". Depending on where you are in Midwest, it should be fine as a winter jacket, provided you own a water/wind repelling shell to go with it. My husband works in St Louis and wears his Ghost whisperer there all the time. We both love it! The comfiest jacket out there! And at this price you won't regret buying it!

I live in Northern Virginia, not quite the Midwest, but in the Shenandoah Valley we can get a lot of cold winds swooping between the mountains in the winter and we do get some snow. I don't wear this jacket a lot, not because I don't like it - I love it. But it's too warm! It's great when I go to the WV mountains and it's in the teens or below. The thinness is due to the down - don't need a lot of it! I think it would be fine in the Midwest - more useful there than here!

By the way, maybe I'm more "hardy" than the other reviewers. I only need a light jacket when it's in the upper 40's. I'm originally from SW Washington (state) so, I'm used to colder weather. So I guess it also depends upon your body's tolerance to cold. But either way, this is one of the warmest jackets I've ever owned.

The jacket is warm enough at temperatures down to the upper 40 degrees (for women since men tend to tolerate cold better) but I would wear another soft shell or rain shell layer over it in colder temperatures. I would not wear this jacket in wet weather unless it is an middle insulation layer.

It is a great jacket, very versatile and comfortable. I live in Southwest, and wear it a lot. I would say it might be not warm enough for your climate, but in addition to other winter jackets - fantastic.
