Questions about this item:
k l I'm about 5'7 1/2, 153 lb, 30inch waist. im going to backpack in europe for 21 days (not camping). should i forgoet about this backpack? (since i saw a few comments regarding it's waist belt not fitted for ppl under 32 inch waist...) i really like the design and functionality (great rain cover that's useful for checking in at the airport as well)
thanks all.
ROLLAND R I absolutely love this pack! Very durable. I've had it for 4 years and 2 months ago, used it to backpack across the Grand Canyon.
You and I are almost the same size. I'm 5'8", 158 lbs with 31 inch waist. I had to pull the hip straps all the way in (before putting on the pack) and it fits.
30 inch waist will be close. I highly recommend this pack. For the price, and all the features, I would recommend ordering and trying it. If it doesn't fit, return it.
Maybe you could eat a lot of delicious buttery crossiants while in Europe and then the pack will fit just right. :)
JEFF H It's a great pack but your right the waist support is a bit long. I'm wear 34's and there is just a few inches of gap when tighend up but I wear mine tight! This is no new concern. I would hope HS has corrected this in the past few years. If you have the time it might be worth buying and if it dose not work return it. Sunny sports is pretty good about that.
JODY L I am 250 with a large waist, I can see after using it 6-7 times , that it may not go small enough for your comfort. I had an issue with it for my 13 year old son , with the waist just making it , he has a 29 inch waist..
KELLY M I can tell you this backpack is awesome. I've been using it for years for backpacking/hiking/camping and it has never let me down. As for the waist, yeah it might not work for you if you have a 30" waist. I'm also 5' 7" and weigh 165 with a 34" waist and have it sinched down pretty close to it's limit. I would say maybe if you had a 32" waist you could do it but at 30" that would be pretty close. You could always give it a shot and return it if it doesn't work. Sunny Sports is great about returns.
Good luck in Europe! That sounds amazing. I always wanted to do that but never did.
DERRICK J Hey, your situation was mine exactly. I was able to get the belt to fit me and my waist it right at 30inches. I'm 6ft and weighed 135lb's at the time. I had a zipper break on my during the trip (not a major one). Customer support was great and I had a brand new bag shipped to me. I would highly recommend it!
k l thanks for the responses!
REBECCA R I am 5'5". I had no issues with this bag. I traveled through Europe for 3months. Staying at hostels, hotels, and an apartment. I now use this for camping etc. I'd buy it again if I needed too.
k l if you don't mind disclosing, what size waist are you? i'm getting mixed answers here lol some say it'll be loose some say it will be fine. if you are less than 32 inch waist, would you mind telling me whether the waist strap stays snug on you?
JONATHAN L This backpack will not work too well for a 30 inch waist. My waist is 33 inches and I have to sinch of the belt completely. It is a great backpack otherwise.
Shopper i have a 30 inch waist (at least for the pants i wear that's what usually fits) should i be concerned with the fit?
NEIL D The issue with this pack is the length of the waist straps. They are far too long. (Cannot imagine the focus group that helped put the spec together for this). I have to hike with the excess waist straps looped and tucked on themselves.
Good pack. Good value.
DANIELLE L Hello!
First off- I absolutely adore this backpack. I've had it since 2008, and it's been all around the world with me- currently in Liberia. It's just excellent.
I will say, though, I have a 27 inch waist, and I tighten the strap all the way...but I think you'll be totally fine!
Enjoy your travels.
Dani
KENDALL W You will be fine. The belt is adjustable from 24" to 40"
MICHAEL L This pack should be suffice for your fit. My son is a size 28 slim and it has served him well these past years. Durable pack.
JEFF Z I wouldn't think so.
ROY S When i bought this pack i had a 38 inch waist and it fit quite comfortably. I think with a 30in waist you would be fine. If i could make one recommendation, i would take a look at the pack one size up from this. I forget the name (somethign 90) but it was essentially the same design with a number of exterior pouchs which are way more accessible that was is available on the 65. Otherwise this pack was great for me doing 2 and 3 night hikes.
Shopper What is the height range for this pack? I need a new pack, and I tried on each of my two sons packs, the Appalachian 75 and Explorer 55, and the Explorer fit better. But, I am going on trips where the minimum capacity allowed is 65 L. The Explorer's height range is 64-68 inches and the Appalachian is 68-72 inches. I am 64 inches tall, have a 32 inch waist and have a 17 inch torso. Would the Sentinel 65 work for me?
FRAMK V The High Sierra Sentinel 65 is fully adjustable and is very comfortable when properly fitted. The 65 is the perfect size for a 2-3 day outing.
NEIL D I have owned the Sentinel 65 for 4 years. It is a load hauler. Not the fanciest. But I have overloaded it to 60+ pounds on a couple of occasions. And even though I am 5' 8" and go about 155, it was stable and manageable. I keep working to limit my load sizes. Best of luck with your decision.
JUAN A I am 5' 10" and its a little big for me. It best fits taller folks above 6' and waist over 34". It is a great pack though, lots of room and very comfortable. I used it on an overnight in the Great Smokies and fit my equipment and part of my wife's as well. if you don't mind it being slightly large then its ok.
Shopper would this pack work for me if I an about 5'7" 135lbs and have about a 29in waist?
ROY S I'm 6' 1 and 250 lbs and this packs worked fine for me though I was pretty much at its upper limits. My friend who was 5 8 and close to 150 tried it on and it fit perfectly.
JUAN A Not realy, this pack is for taller and larger people. I am 5'11" and have a 34" waist and its a little loose on me. It is a nice pack though for larger frames..
JEFF Z I think it might be a bit too big.
NEIL D I have owned this pack for a few years. Good value. I am 5'8" and go about 155 lbs. This works for me. However, the straps around the waist are ridiculously long. I hike with the excess triple looped just to keep it all out of the way. So since you are 'slight of waist', it might be something to consider.
Overall, I have been satisfied with this pack and own 3 of High Sierra's different capacity sizes.
Good luck with whatever you decide.
Shopper Does anyone have any idea what are the main differences between the High Sierra Sentinel and Titan models? They both have capacities of 65L, but beyond some marketing jargon and different storage layout such as waistband pockets, there seems to be little obvious difference in build quality or construction material. Any thoughts or feedback is appreciated.
O F Thanks for your feedback. The Sentinel sounds like a great pack. I was wondering how it compares the the Titan 65L, which is also made by High Sierra, but it is part of their Tech Series as opposed to their Classic Series, of which the Sentinel is part of. There seems to be very little information or reviews online about the Titan, it appears to be a newer pack. I'm just not sure what the differences between them are, apart from the cosmetic. Are they aimed at different users, or at a different price point? No one seems to know, and I've sent a couple of emails to High Sierra with no response.
DANIELLE L I purchased the High Sierra Sentinel 65 back in '08, and it was honestly one of the best purchases I've made. I did a great deal of research before buying it, and I couldn't have been happier with my decision. I went backpacking for a few months in Europe, which was why I had originally bought the pack. It's incredible- super durable, amazingly comfortable, and holds A TON of stuff. At one point my pack was up to 80 pounds, and it felt as if I was carrying half that weight. I have used it many times since then, with no quality issues (all zippers work great, material is sturdy, etc.) A big concern for me was how versatile the pack would be- I was afraid because I'm a woman of relatively small build that it would overwhelm me. Not at all! It's massive, but so useable, for anyone of any stature. And, an amazing deal...I couldn't be more happy with it! Hope this helps.
Shopper What is the waist range for this pack?
SunnySports S The waist range is 32 - 50 inches. Stay safe and have fun out there! Neal
Shopper I am looking for a pack that I can use for hikes ranging from a day to week. Knowing that I go on these trips on all seasons, should i get the High Sierra Sentinel 65 or the Appalachian 75? I hear that for winter treks a larger bag would be better, yet i am reluctant to spend more for the 75 liter bag. Which one should i get?
SunnySports S For winter treks you are correct many times a bigger pack can be very helpful. It really depends on how and what you pack for your treks whether the 65 or 75 will be best for you. In all honesty I think you could probably get away with the 65 for your needs as long as you are careful in how and what you pack. Neal
Shopper Why does this pack not have any sizes?
SunnySports S What sizes do you need?Pack Dimensions 32 x 14.25 x 8.75 in. Torso Fit Range 15 to 20 in. Weight 4.8 lbs. Capacity 3970 cubic inches 65-liter, top-load main compartment
Shopper Can this pack be taken on a plane as a carry on?
SunnySports S Not if packed to capacity!
Shopper my height is 6"1" and weight is 215 lbs. would this pack most likely fit me comfortably or should i find one for with a longer torso measurement?
SunnySports S This pack has a Torso Fit Range 15 to 20 in. I have to know your torso measurment to know if it will fit
Shopper how do I tell if a back pack is going to fit me?
SunnySports S First get a friend to help you measure:Using a flexible tape measure, measure the length of your torso from the C7 vertebra (at the base of your neck) to the spot on the spine level with the top of the bony hip structure called the iliac crest. Do it two or three times to get an accurate measurement. If you are between frame sizes, always go with the smaller size. Now that you know your torso, almost every pack lists the "Torso Fit Range"If your slightly heavy, you might want to check with the manufacturer about the waist belt fit size.
Shopper I am looking for a quality backpack for a young man torso length 20.5, He is new to hiking. They are currently planning a 3- 4 day trip. What other bags would compare to the High Sierra 65 and Jansport 82. Try to keep price close to or under $100.00
SunnySports S I would go with the High Sierra over the Jansport. The Sierra is much more comfortable with a full load. The built in Rain Cover is a great feature, most companies make you buy it as an accessory.
Shopper I am going to philmont scout ranch and I need a good pack to take with me, I have no idea what kind of pack I need. HELP ME!!!!!!
SunnySports S First the fit & torso measureUsing a flexible tape measure, measure the length of your torso from the C7 vertebra (at the base of your neck) to the spot on the spine level with the top of the bony hip structure called the iliac crest. Do it two or three times to get an accurate measurement. If you are between frame sizes, always go with the smaller size. Now that you know your torso size you can look for packs that fit your torso and have 4800cu in capacity. An example is our SKU LAPCT65
Shopper Would this backpack be good for a week's worth of backpacking?
SunnySports S This pack should do great a week's (or longer) worth of backpacking.
