Understand what this product is (a much comfier alternative to sitting on the hard, unsupportive ground) and you'll be pleased as punch to own one. I break mine out for lunches or camp when kayaking (fits nicely in my large hatch), manning the candy bowl at the local trunk-or-treat, or enduring whatever sporting event I'm being dragged to (ground or bleacher, you'll be happier letting this get your back). Yes, if someone brought a couch, I'll pick the couch over this, but I've yet to figure o...ut how to get my couch in my rear hatch.

What are the reinforcement squares made of (at the ends) that keep the stays from poking through over time? Is it rubber? Leather? Waterproof?

Sorry I am not sure, both all mine were on the blue side. One was a different color blue. The color shouldn't really matter, you won't see it as your sitting on it. I do wish it had more padding to sit on. It does save the back when sitting on a bench type seat.
