Screenhouse Survives High Winds

By bufflecat

 -  Chicago, IL, United States

In August of 2016 I was camping in northeastern Minnesota when a very severe line of thunderstorms came through during the night. Since I was leaving the next morning and weather was fine that evening, I did not have the Screenhouse staked into the ground. The storm was so severe that our tent was blown over with us in it and trees were knocked down. At sunrise I surveyed the damage and found the Screenhouse crumpled like a dead bug in the forest. To my surprise when I pulled it out, it w...

Top canopy lasted 2 years, but CAN be replaced

By Amanda W.

To correct some other reviews, Coleman DOES sell replacement canopies for ~$54 (& free shipping). Two summers outside made the top brittle and rip, but only the canopy was damaged so very worth replacing.

Steve S  are privacy panels available?
JAMES G  I am not aware of any privacy panels, it does not come with any
Steve S  How wide and tall are the 6 panels? Are they all the same size? Thanks, James... steve
JAMES G  The screen panels are all the same size. 2 panels zip down the middle for 2 ways to enter. I don't have mine anymore, a tree came down in a storm about a month ago and crushed it. My wife and I loved ours! :(
MICHAEL W  It doesn't come with privacy panels. I'm not sure if u can get anything like that as an accessory.
DAN V  Privacy panels were not included. May need to contact manufacturer to see if they are available.
MONICA L  We returned this unopened. It wasn't what my husband wanted. Sorry I can't help you.
DEREK L  Don't know. I'm a consumer. Not the manufacturer
DOUGLAS M  Unfortunately no
Linda T  We want to use this on our deck to be able to spend more time outside without the bugs. My concern is space within the shelter. Is there enough room to fit a rectangle table with six chairs and still have room to move around?
ROGER L  It will be tight in the corners, but over all this should work.
ROBIN S  Hi Linda, There is a lot of room inside this screened in shelter. We take if camping with us and love it. It also has to zippers directly across from each other so you can enter it from two sides. We definitely love the straight sides as well. Robin
TRACEY M  First let me start by saying that we absolutely LOVE our Coleman Shelter. We set it up in the backyard in May and leave it up for the summer. We use it as often as possible for eating and relaxing. I do feel it would be a bit tight with a rectangular table and six chairs with room to move around. We currently have a 43 inch round table with 4 chairs and we do have room to move around. You would probably need a bigger structure. Good luck with your decision!!
DAN V  We purchased this item for campng and it has worked out great. We always set it up over the picnic table in the campsite and if positioned correctly one end of the picnic table is against the edge of the shelter leaving enough room on the other end to walk around. I would think if you are using an 8ft rectangular table it would work out prefectly.
ROBERT W  We took ours camping, and put a full size 8 foot picnic table inside ours, and it worked out fine. At home, we have a round table with 4 chairs, plus 2 adirondack chairs inside, with plenty of room to maneuver around inside. So I don't think you will have any problems.
LINDA R  No, I don't think so. We have a medium sized round table and four chairs in ours, and it fills the tent.
BENJAMIN M  We have a patio eating set which includes a table, dimension of 65"x42" and 6 chairs. I measured the inside of the shelter and the patio set will fit (including chairs) but it will definitely take up all of the room. You will have about a foot around the inside perimeter to move around in. It is do able but eating is about all you can do with that furniture in the space. Hope this is helpful.
NORM S  The unit had good amount of space, we took it camping and put it over the picnic table and did not feel cramped at all.
RICHARD P  We use the shelter when we are camping. We often install the shelter over the top of a picnic table at the campgrounds where we are staying. This is a good size shelter inside and we have no problem moving around inside with the table and additional camping gear. It really depends on the size of the table and the number of people inside. We have been very happy with our coleman instant shelter and think you would be satisfied with the quality of this product. R. L. Parsons
BRUCE B  I have a round 42" table with 4 chairs and theres pleanty of room. I suggest you tape off the shelter dimension around your table and mark with tape. see how it feels.
MORIAH C  We really love this shelter! I haven't tried that configuration but, I don't see why it wouldn't work. Might be tight on the ends if you figure a 6ft table and a couple feet on each end for chairs. A 5ft table would work great.
JAMES G  Linda, I would say no..... I have 4 chairs and i found that I need to keep them well away from the screen walls. The wind moves the walls in and out and they rubbed holes thru the screen from rubbing against the backs of the chairs!
KYLE S  It is relative to the size of the table, 6' would work great or 8' max length and you would still have room to get around if you pushed one end against the side wall. I have a round table and have lots of room to spare. The big downfall with these screen rooms is the wind. I left mine out over night in 15mph winds in a slightly protected area and it still shredded the roof, no replacement parts. Good luck. Kyle
JUSTIN N  Linda, That would depend on how big your table is, I do know that we have had a card table with 4 chairs in ours and were able to move around, and my wife and I set inside on our two chairs with a fan & a drop light hanging and have lots of room. Perhaps if you put your table along the screen and your chairs along the rest of the screen, but I really don't know about putting it in the middle with chairs all around.. It would no doubt fit but how much room you would have to move around would come back to how big the table is. Hope this helps, we really like ours, if fact I put it up last weekend and it's out in the yard as I type... lol I think is was a great investment for us as here in Michigan we have allot of pests... Good luck and enjoy your summer. Justin & Mary N.
michelle v  Does it shed water?
CLYDE M  yes, it does. Make sure to fold it up if its gonna get windy though.
BENJAMIN M  YES, it does shed water. We love this shelter. Believe it or not we are renting a house and we bought this enclosure to use an an aviary for our pet parrot since the house does not have a screened porch. We leave the shelter up all the time even when it rains unless strong winds are anticipated. ( But of course we bring the bird inside the house during inclement weather and at night. ) Our experience has been that mild winds - guest of 15 -20mph is okay to leave shelter up. Higher is also probably okay but do not want to take the chance. The shelter is extremely easy to set-up (two people is best) and take down. Can even just take off the wrap around screening and leave the shelter itself up. Hope this helps in making your purchase decision.
JUSTIN N  I'm not quiet sure what you mean by "shed water" if you mean "does it leak inside from the roof" I would answer "no" our's has been out in the rain and we've been inside it while it was raining and did not get wet from the roof.. with the screens you may have water blow through with wind but the roof material I believe is waterproof. I don't like having it up if there is a storm or many days of rain so I usually take it down.. but we really like ours as it keeps us seperated from the mosquitoes. Hope this helps, Justin N.
K A  We bought our last year and have used it for a full summer. Ours does shed water, but ONLY if you don't touch the inside of the fabric. Anywhere we touch it it springs an instant leak (like an old-fashioned tent). The fabric doesn't break or anything -- it just wicks the water right through. So although it kept things relatively dry, we wouldn't depend on it as a water-tight shelter. The other consideration is that unless the rain is coming straight down (not often in a storm), the water comes in through the screen. Otherwise we've been very happy with it, as our primary concern was keeping out the bugs.
ROBERT W  One other thing I forgot to add about this shelter thats great, is the straight sides. Most others have slanted sides which lets water in, but the straight sides are drier and easier to use.
ROBERT W  It sheds water pretty good, has a couple seam drips, but nothing to detract from using it. And in all fairness that was during a downpour. One big plus is the ease of assembly, my wife and I can have it complete in less than 10 minutes. And its big. I looked around a lot and you won't find a better screen house for the money unless you spend twice as much or more. We love it.
THOMAS E  Yes. We camped on Cape Cod, MA last summer and it rained hard for several days and we had no issues with it shedding water. When we came home I cleaned the top since we were under a lot of trees and treated with CAmp Dry in preparation for the future. I've done this for all my tempts, so it's no indication that it needed it, just proactive maintenance.
THOMAS Q  Yes it does. It is quite good in the rain. I don't think it is designed for constant use though, I had ours up for about 1 year and the sun made the top brittle, so that a cat, jumping onto it from above ripped it. I still use the screen, and the frame is really sturdy, so one day I may have a new top made - out of a heavier canvas.
CRAIG M  Yes, no problem have been noted in rain
KELLY C  I love this shelter. I've used it one time for a 4 night long camping trip, and it kept everything nice and dry. It rained 2 of the 4 nights, and this shelter did not leak at all.
