CHAZ B  hello, my name is Chaz and I'd be glad to answer this. it is for the charger and the battery. to put it simply, what u see in the photo on the left IS the battery. it replaces the entire bottom of the lamp. It is one solid contained unit. I like that is has color change led to indicate dead, charging , charged. red, amber, green. I have found it well worth it to have the NRG 2 battery kit for the Orbit. and overall I LOVE this little dynamo, packs down small, has power button that can NOT be pushed while in pack as it is under/behind the globe.
