I needed something that would be good for travel and my work commute, with comfortable straps, lots of little pockets to organize things and the ability to hold and protect my 17" lap top-this is the only bag I found to do all of that perfectly. There are actually 5 sections: Front organizer with little pockets and access from the front zippers, secondary organizer with little pockets and more room, main compartment that is vastly adjustable, separate well padded laptop compartment closest to your back (last 3 zipper from top) and then a zipper for a small area on the bottom to hold your power cord. The laptop compartment is well padded on all sides, including the bottom. The adjustable straps on the side and bottom compact the main compartment to nearly flat when necessary, but I could fit at least 6" of books in there if needed. There is a SMALL stretchy pocket on the shoulder strap for wee-little phones or i-pods-but there are plenty of areas inside for these items too-just not easy access on the run. 2 side pockets for water bottles manage to hold umbrellas-pretty standard. The cherry stain color is mainly a bright orange, brighter than I had hoped-but I wanted color.

I spent a week in Japan on business. My computer fit great and I was able to pack any other files or valubles. This worked well for day travel and along with my carry on luggage I was sufficiently packed for the week. Comfortable staps and well balanced. A little big under the seat in front of you on the plane, but it fits.

I bought this back pack for school, as well as the occasional outdoor adventure and other issues. So far it has not let me down, its real easy to pack, the material is great, it has numerous pockets, and is very comfortable to wear. Absolutely no complaints, highly recommend this pack for anyone!

I use it every workday to carry my laptop and papers to two different work sites. Much better than a briefcase or messanger bag.

I'm a college student and plan to use this to carry my 15" macbook pro around as well as books, etc. I really like the versatility this bag offers, with both the protection needed to carry a laptop and the durability to use as a daypack for hiking and such. My laptop fits in the compartment pretty securely with plenty of space left over in the many other pockets. Lots of pockets are leftover for miscellaneous gear, and the build quality is great (as one would expect of The North Face products). My only gripe is the lack of dedicated places for clips on the outside; I like to clip water bottles or shoes on the outside of my bag, and there aren't many spaces for it. But if you're willing to improvise, there are plenty of places on the pack that could suit such a purpose. Overall great bag.

First off... This is the real 2009 model. Not a cheap knock off. I know that its difficult for many people to buy from the web, especially from a website you may not have heard of. But trust me when I say that I will always buy my outdoors stuff from Sunny Sports! (You getting this Carl?)
The Bag is large, there is a lot of room for me to carry of all my books and a laptop for class (My laptop is 13' but you could fit 17' easily). Also its perfect for going hiking. With other backpacks I have had problems with the shoulder straps being to short so they tend to hurt my back. However, Since using this backpack I have been able to carry even more weight with far less pain. The only downside is that its probably to large for children or smaller people. I'm 6'0 210lbs and its perfect for me.

The backpack is perfect! I use it for carrying my laptop to work, friend's homes, and business trips. My 17" laptop fits snug and is well padded so I know it is safe. There is also plenty of other room in the pack. [...] the price was GREAT!! I would recommend the backpack and Sunny Sports to anyone!!!

I'm a college student who needed a backpack that was versatile enough for both carrying a laptop around campus and also hiking mountains and waterfalls with my buddies on the weekend. This design is cool and practical and fills every need I have.
My favorite feature is the very front pocket, which I can access by simply unbuckling the clip that holds down the front flap. This is where I can easily access and deposit all the small things that I have on hand.
The only drawbacks to this backpack are #1: It's sort of stiff, which makes it hard for me to carry it around campus for long periods of time without using the super nerdy front straps and #2 It's a little bit on the large side for females. Other than those minor things though, I would recommend this product to anyone!

I have been using this pack for a month now. I wanted a backpack I could use on a one day hike, but also take it to class. I highly recommend this if you own a Mac. I have a 15" Macbook Pro with a hard shell case surrounding it and a soft shell case I zip it into. It fits perfectly into this pack.
The only thing I could tell you to be careful about is if you are big around the stomach area, you may not be able to lock in the bottom strap. I am a fit guy (5'9,165lbs) and I have it stretched to the limit. Other than that this has by far been the best pack I have ever owned.
My friends always say once you go North Face you never go back... now I know why.

I bought this for my friend who is going to spend eight months traveling around Southeast Asia. He wanted a backpack for his laptop, but that also was comfortable, had pockets for his stuff, a place to hold water, etc. He needed it to be comfortable. After researching online like crazy, the reviews pointed me to this pack. It lives up to the hype - GREAT product. It's going to be just perfect for his needs. PLUS it's durable... it'll hold up to the travels!!

I use this bag everyday for school and have been able to switch it over easily to a day tripper. Great bag overall, I just wish it held a little more. The laptop slot is a perfect fit, even for a big 19" like I use.
Comments about North Face The North Face Surge Daypack:
Fit and finish is excellent. Nice features. Great protection for laptop. I'm a little disappointed in the main compartment for holding a sizable bunch of papers, files, etc.

This backpack is perfect for the student on the go! It holds everything I need with plenty of space for my laptop, books, supplies, and even my lunch. I was surprised at how the backpack didn't seem to add additional weight to my daily load, and it actually makes carrying all that stuff more comfortable thanks to the extra padding and support it offers. I love all the little pockets, it has a place for everything including the two deep water bottle pouches on the sides. I highly recommend this backpack to any student, not only is it functional, but it looks cool, too!
