I just got back from a 2-week vacation through Europe and only used this pack, not having to "check baggage". I liked the option of the "backpack", but ended up pulling it and wearing the day-pack everywhere, which worked wonderfully.
There was a time when I zipped the day-pack on and put on the backpack, but there was not enough padding at the wheel area. It was uncomfortable and didn't feel it distributed the weight very well.
It fit in the overhead compartments and had no problems packing all my items. I would highly recommend this bag and will use it again when traveling abroad.

My family owns three of these bags: two for traveling and one for the student in the family. They have gone from the Panama Canal to China and everywhere in between. Just a great bag with great features. Love the zip off day pack for walking, touring and hiking. This bag goes everywhere you do and carries everything you need- plus fits on the plane with no worries!

Used this pack for a 15 day Peru trip. Great idea for a bag, needs improvement on the quality of construction. First and only problem encountered was with the zipper that holds the daypack to the larger wheeled backpack... I removed the daypack from the backpack and checked in the backpack only -- all was great,all parts still intact at that point, until I retrieved my backpack from the baggage claim conveyor belt after the first nonstop plane ride. The "box" that allows one to correctly align the separated zipper halves of the daypack to the backpack was missing from the backpack (probably weak attachment got snagged on other luggage during handling). The zipper was still workable, but I had to carefully "marry" the zipper halves to zipper my daypack onto the backpack, otherwise the zipper halves would separate if I wasn't careful. Also, since there wasn't something to keep the slider on the zipper chain anymore, I could have lost the slider and not have been able to attach the daypack to the backpack anymore. That was the only problem. Otherwise, fairly spacious, good selection of compartments. Suggestion: "Waterproof" the bag by spraying it with a water protectant/shield spray -- helped make my bag and contents stay drier during wet days, since this bag is not water resistant.

This piece of luggage was perfect for our European adventure. It fit in all carry ons -even though I check it a couple of times on the Euro flights. 10 days - 4 countries. I couldn't have ask for an easier piece to follow me everywhere. I ended up rolling it much more than I had anticipated. It did great on cobblestone streets! The only time I picked it up was up and down the stairs getting on the metro. I chose not to use the backpack feature because I had stuffed so many clothes into it and I kept up with the guys just fine rolling it. I loved that I could unzip the daypack for our walking excursions. Plenty of pockets. I will use this piece over and over again.
