I have used these for years to keep junk out of my shoes and boots when hiking, but my primary function for them is to treat them with Permethin a bug repellant that repells and kills ticks and chinch bugs. I hike and camp in all weather and during the summer here in the south some trails have heavy tick action. Without these, i might be dead, yes, drained of all blood and lying in a thicket somewhere. I also use them to cut my grass, hold shoe laces and pant legs out of the way when extreme mountain biking and for the occasional thorn thicket scramble. These work pretty well with both shorts and long pants.
