ROBIN A I bought the Large and it fits my 4-yr old (45-60 lbs.). I would buy one that has a float in the middle. This style is more to allow them to swim with their arms.
DARLENE R Yes, Cheri, I believe medium will be to big- these vests are NOT life preservers, so they are intended to help children discover maneuverability and mobility rather than provide intractable buoyancy (based upon weight). The kids are like mindless floating barrels, at first! It does not take long before they are turning round and round on purpose, then motivating, then fearless. I definately recommend a tiny bit of direct-supervision-in-pool-with-no-vest as often as you can stand it, to offset the (wonderful!) fearlessness of the jacket, and because independent jacketless swimming begins with underwater swimming. We love, love the Seal Kids tinted goggles. Our older grandchild swam at a younger age because we had no jacket, we HAD to be with him in the pool all the time. Our younger swam later/older, but the peace of mind we had, and the freedom he had to swim more often (we could not always go in, but could more often watch from a pool chair) were priceless. BOTH the early swimmer (overconfident) and the late swimmer (needed jacket) had equal parental safety concerns. Best Wishes!
