Shopper does the skeg help keep the kayak straight in its path? Does it turn better as well ?
JOSEPH D In my opinion it marginally helps, but the inflatables still will not track anywhere near as well as a hard shell canoe or kayak. It makes a slightly wider turn with this feature. Without the skeg, it often seems like the inflatables can make a zero turn just by paddling hard on one side.
J W Yes the skeg keeps the kayak straight and helps it turn better. It's well worth adding to the kayak.
ROBERT F Yes, the Skeg works it made the boat track straight and made paddling a breeze!
JAY A Yes, the skegs help keep the kayaks much more stable and tracking straight. You just have to make sure you put it on the kayak straight and you'll have no problems. The skegs make the blow-up kayaks feel a lot more like a real kayak. They do help the kayaks turn better than without a skeg. We have three Sevylor kayaks and we bought skegs for all three of them. Our friends have hard body kayaks, and when we go out together, theirs go a little faster, but ours go just as straight as theirs.
NICK D The Skeg definately helps keep the kayak straight especially when it is breezy or windy. It seems that the skeg minimizes the effort needed in paddling as well. I didn't notice any difference in turning with the skeg.
BOB J The skeg is awesome!!!! Without it you got a big raft. With it you can go straight, much faster and turning is easy. I have no idea why it does not come with every kayak. Totally worth whatever it cost. I bought two because after years of abuse it snapped. Hard to do but I managed. Ps on my second Tahitis after 5 years of good use.
CHRIS N without the skeg the boat goes where ever it wants regardless of what you do.... add the skeg and you have a boat worth every penny... so yes it does go straighter and turns quite a bit easier.
CRAIG L YES, without the skeg I had trouble staying in a straight line. The skeg has helped me tremendously.
CONNIE P Yes, the skeg improves the performance of the kayak dramatically! It isn't perfect but it does keep it fairly straight on flat water.
JAMES G I would not go out on the water without a Skeg. It's an item that you can't do without.
