Questions about this item:
Bill H Which jacket is more waterproof, heavy duty, durable, the Torrentshell or the Rain Shadow?
XUEJIANG C Only waterproof, not heavy duty.
ARTHUR W Hi Bill, I currently own the Torrentshell. My brother has the Rainshadow. They both use the same Patagonia waterproofing technology. The Rainshadow is a little bit heavier of a material with a liner. The liner will feel much nicer against your skin, than the jacket material. So if your wearing a t-shirt for example, the bare basics Torrentshell feels a bit clingy on your arms. If you had to go for one, get the Rainshadow. It appears better built, and you will want the liner.
I personally would not buy a Patagonia jacket for rain, simply due to the fact that they are not breathable at all. I live in subtropical Australia, and it rains here all the time. And whether it was rain or sweat, my arms were always wet in the Torrentshell. After a 20 min bike ride in the rain to university, my arms were wet. I also hate the feel of the waterproof fabric against my bare skin, it's really uncomfortable. I wear the Torrentshell only if i have to, or if I have a long sleeve shirt on.
I would suggest shopping around. There are the new Neoshell, and Gore Active fabrics out now. I plan to shop around further.
Carmelito E Gentlemen:
I am also interested in this jacket. Please tell me if there are pockets on the inner (reverse) side of the jacket?
Thanks- Carmelito
RON A Sorry this is so late, but there is one large mesh pocket on the lower inside, measures 5 inches wide and 7 inches deep with no top closure. I have used it for a water bottle, but would also hold tennis balls or dog walking stuff like treats or bags, etc. as well as personal electronic stuff.
A note on the product: It takes some time for the stiffness to work its way out of the jacket. When taken from the package it seems very cheap, but after a few days of use it gets a lot better. It is very rainproof from my short experience.
ADAM B Mine has one mesh pocket, though I will note it is open (without a zipper or any other way to secure the items in it other than gravity).
SCOTT H There is one pocket on the inside right, it is not a zip pocket though. It is a drop in pocket with elastic on the top.
jae c There is a pocket on the inner side.
but it is mesh pocket for storage cloth cover.
no zipper pocket.
JOHN D There's a single mesh pocket on the right-hand side. It's big enough to probably hold a phone, wallet, and keys in an emergency.
Shopper Does this jacket repel water? Yes, its supposed to, but does it?
LOGAN M Yes, very much so. I've had mine for 2 1/2 years and the DWR ("durable water-repellent") exterior treatment is still holding up save a few small spots around the cuffs and other wear points. I must stress these are SMALL spots and the jacket still breaths really well. Of corse even if the DWR was completely warn off it would still keep you completely dry.
They say no rain gear will keep you completely dry for long in a serious downpoor. I beg to differ. I don't know how this jacket does it, but it does! This was illustrated to me when a 350-mile, one-day trip yielded ten hours of torture on two wheels. My motorcycle trip from Northern California to the Oregon coast involved rain, sleet and/or hail nearly the entire time... Strangely there was no snow. Anyway, it was mostly rain and I somehow, again after TEN HOURS of riding what amounts to nothing more than a dirtbike with turn signals, I came out of it COMPLETELY dry with the exception of my wrists and forearms(I would have had to glue the jacket to my wrists to do any better). It still amazes me and I'm very picky about my gear's performance. I cannot ask for anything more from this one!
LUEKA H It does, very well in fact. I have been happy with mine.
SAM O Repels wafer like a champ. I owned a rain jacket from ll bean before this and can safely say I will never go back. Been riding my bike Ina downpour and stayed bone dry. Just make sure to shake the jacket off before bringing inside or it will drip off the outside onto the floor. This is a great jacket! I am 5'11" 165lbs and got a medium. Probably should have got a large if I could go back. Hope this helps!
ADAM W Yes it does. This is the first "water proof" jacket I've bought, as opposed to water resistant, and it definitely repels water. If you've worn any heavy helly hansen jackets, they repel water but don't breath at all. You can still work up a sweat if you're working in it, but it is noticeably easier to stay cool with this jacket since there is air flow. Same goes for the pants. They're pricey, in my opinion, but worth the cost, and work well. I've had them about 2 years and no real wear to speak of.
Happy to answer any other questions.

Tropical rainforests share at least one thing with the Patagonia Ice Cap: wet weather. For trekking and hiking in drenching conditions, Patagonia's Torrentshell provides 2.5-layer waterproof/breathable protection that's durable, lightweight and without frills. The nylon jacket stuffs into one of two zippered handwarmer pockets (and has a clip-in loop); the hood rolls down, stows away, and has a laminated visor; and the center zipper has exterior and interior storm flaps. With pit zips for added ventilation, a microfleece-lined neck, and a drawcord hem.
