Questions about this item:
Shopper Why Did You Choose This?
ADAM W I chose it because it compresses easily in packs.
RICHARD H Light, reasonably sturdy. I keep one hard-sided Nalgene and use these soft-sides for the rest.
Shopper Is this one bottle or two?
JOELLE T I have purchased this recently, and it is one (1) bottle, of 1L (liter) or 34oz.
MARK M It's only one bottle.
Chris N How to clean this?
BAMBI G I love my platypus, no after taste! As soon as I get home from a trip I rinse out my platypus, then fill it .5L and add about 1/4 c. of white vinegar, swish it around, dump and then rinse a few times. If it has any grim on the inside I use a soft laboratory/bottle brush. Since going green I found a use for my paper towel holder, I turn my platypus upside down on the rod to dry. Hope this helps!
Chris N Wow, what a great idea using the towel rod for drying. It works! Also, I should have thought of the viniger myself as I am a big fan of using it for so many things. Thank you for the reply.
ADAM W Rinse this bottle with soapy water to clean easily.
RICHARD K I usually fill the bottle about half way with water. Put about an 1/8 cup of bleach in it (use a brand without soap) shake it up, fill it the rest of the way with water and let it soak for a couple of hours. Then dump it half out shake some more, dump and rinse with water.
For drinking, I also never really put anything into it but water.
PHILLIP H Well, since they don't make a Platypus Plus Premium Bottle Brush, you could try to use either the Camelbak cleaning system, a generic equivalent or a baby bottle brush, but I suspect all are too big. You could try to get some 3/4-1" in diameter bottle brushes from Grainger or Amazon. You can also use Hydration Reservoir Cleaning Tablets, 20 Ct. made by Outdoor Products (Part No. CAA005-ZZZOP) available at Wal Mart or Amazon. Or you could just empty it, rinse it out with a mild solution of H2O and Clorox, rinse again and let it air dry immediately after you return from your outing. If you wait 2 years between emptying and cleaning your reservoir and you find that it is filled with a beautiful blue green algae...mix up about a 1/4 cup of Chlorox with warm water, pour it into the reservoir, shake it up good and let it sit with for 30 minutes or so until all the green gunk is gone. Then rinse and repeat as necessary.
Shopper Can I use it to store liquor? Is it safe to put in my luggage?
LANCE S I actually use mine as a flask on the trail. It's a lot lighter than the rigid kind, and more compact-able at the end of the trip. Whisky is lighter than beer :-) And, while I don't think the alcohol adversely impacts the bottle material, don't expect to get 100% of the flavor/smell of the liquor out. When I use it as a water bottle there's a definite hint of whisky left behind.
It's a tough bottle, but not indestructible. I pack mine if a very tight backpack and I've never experienced/been worried it would burst - just be SURE the top is on tight AND it's completely closed! But I do wrap it pretty thoroughly to make sure no sharp objects in the pack could poke it (fishing reel, eating utensils, etc).
I've been using this and the 6L bottle (for base camp water reservoir) for several seasons now and I've been very happy. Light, durable, packable.
ADAM W You can put it in luggage, and it shouldn't break unless you put it near something that will puncture it.
It is safe to store liquor in, but I don't know if I would recommend this bottle for this since it would likely absorb the flavor of whatever you put into it.
KEVIN P Could easily store and safety keep alcohol in platypus bottles. Though putting anything that could ever break (or has value) in the hands of luggage or cargo handlers is a loosing gamble. If it so important. Find a meeting.
Shopper Is this bottle collapsible?
SunnySports S This bottle is compact and flexible it can be flattened when empty and rolled up. Stay safe and have fun out there! Neal
