This is my 4 season backpacking jacket in Colorado. I use the shell by itself as rain gear. The fleece by itself for mildly cool temps and in my sleeping bag on cold nights. Both together for colder temps. When it drops below freezing I do have to wear warm base layers underneath to manin comfort. It doesn't have the thinckness to be a stand alone garment for sub-freezing temps, but that's okay. I bought it for versitility.

I am happy with the design and features. It's waterproof, but not crinkly like some of my gortex shells. It's breathable which is important because getting sweaty is dangerous in cold weather. The collar design really helps prevent heat loss. I don't often need my balaclava because this jacket provides great coverage. The drawcord at the hem is also a big plus.

I'm 5'8" 160lbs with a 29" waist and 42" chest. The medium would be a more tailored fit, but I opted for the large to get extra length/coverage for full range of motion in the sleeves and hem.

It's a good versitile jacket, just be prepared to use supplemental under layers in extreme cold.

This jacket is absolutely incredible. It is really lightweight, but very warm. Friends have seen it and asked why I'm not wearing a winter jacket. The new technology is such that it is thin, yet warm,even in Chicago windy winters. it is very very comfortable. The zipper goes up high so you can place your mouth behind it and be protected from the cold and wind. The hood is excellent in repelling the wind as well. I HIGHLY HIGHLY recommmend this jacket. each day I continue to be stunned by its effectiveness. At the price of [$] here, it is an outstanding buy. North face retails it at [$]. Not only did I buy it, but after a bit of use, I recommended it to others, and my brother and 2 close freinds bought it as well, and are tremendously satisfied. BY FAR the best winter jacket I ever had.

Great Jacket, downside if any is that the hood could have a rollup into the collar, but very functional for quick flip up with weather and you don't have to unroll it.
