KATHRYN S Can't really answer your questions directly. I have been using Leki poles for many years for hikes in Africa, Europe and Colorado. I love the antishock feature and could not tell you the difference between soft and standard features. I first discovered the 4-section poles when carry-on items became restricted and extra baggage expensive. These poles are the only ones made by anyone that fit inside a large carry-on suitcase. I recommend them highly!
