In an era of packs full of straps and pockets and dangly things, made out of lightweight, flimsy-looking material, the Kelty Lark is a wonderful throwback to simpler times. The robust Cordura suggests rugged durability, the tuck-away backpack straps offer versatility, the top and side carry handles offer a comfortable grip. While I wouldn't go hiking with this pack, the slip-in (unpadded) pocket makes it laptop compatible, the organizer panel on the rear panel of the main compartment makes it travel-safe (do you really want your wallet and passport in that front zippered pocket?), and the vintage, understated look doesn't scream climbing Everest next week (in my dreams) or high school student. Ample room in the large main compartment for whatever, extras go in the large front compartment. My only mild concern is that the padding on the backpack straps is shorter than other packs I own. My shoulders and sternum are amply protected, but the padding ends as it is going under my arms. Grab it by the top, the side, or strap on your back, and you're ready to go. I got the rust color and love it. If you're going vintage, go all the way!
