C M It depends on the size and thickness of the plates. With mine, I've got 2 insulated cups, my stove, stove wind blocker stored, lighter, and store cleaning kit inside my unit. I'm not a crazy ultralight packer and enjoy cooking the trout that I catch... which you canNOT do with a jet boil system. I will cook up full meals in addition to the packaged meals that I carry. For plates, I use Orikaso, which I love! They don't fit inside of this set but are flat and fit great in the pack without taking up near zero room. On a side note, you can use the cutting board as a plate as long as your not eating anything juicy.
