Questions about this item:
Gary L In reading some reviews: I saw one person at 5'11'" who said is feet were up against the bottom end and so got wet. And another who said at 6'2" it was big enough for him. I'm 6'2" and having trouble finding a 1 person tent that I feel is long enough. Ideally I would like to be able to lay on my back in a sleeping bag with my feet pointed straight up and still have a couple inches of clearance at both ends. Will the solitaire work?
DANIEL P I'm 6'5 and if You fix your self nice inside you will be able to lay dow
but is a little hard in a so the place like this
ANTHONY M Gary, I''m 5'10" and it never occurred to me that the tent could be too short. I lived and slept in this tent for a week while elk-hunting with my son (he had his own tent) in the Cascades and I slept supine with some of the 'sensitive' gear below my feet and without any problem. I wish I still had the tent. My son liked it so much, he kept it , uses it often and he is 6'1". I'll probably buy another one this spring as it worked very well.
Gary L Thank you, think I'll give it a try.
Gary
KASEY A I think I might be the person who's 5'11" and wrote the review...because there's no real vestibule in this tent, you have to have your backpack behind you (i.e.; as a pillow) or store it outside the tent. Since I live in a less-than-dry climate, I have to shuffle down to fit with the backpack.
This tent produces a lot of condensation if you don't have the fly rolled back, but if you're not backpacking / camping somewhere with moisture issues (that cause condensation or require you to utilize the backpack pillow method), you'll be fine.
I have to say, though I no longer have this tent because my partner and I need an 2-person tent, that it was an AWESOME tent overall. I got spoiled by carrying something that rolled down to about the size of a basketball and had spindly (albeit sometimes scarily so) poles that didn't take up too much room in my pack.
The fact that you could roll the rainfly back and look at the stars (or escape through the zipper in the mesh so you don't have to climb out the front) was wonderful. Most of the nights I spent in the tent, though, it was too cold to enjoy this option.
Happy shopping!
Gary L Thank you, think I'll give it a try.
Gary
JEFFRY S I purchased 3 of these tents for me & my sons for a 4 day stint on the AT. I'm the tallest at 6'0". If I lay on my back & push my head close to the entrance, I have about 4" of space at the bottom of the tent. I like this tent because if you sleep without the rain cover (which we did on the AT) you can unzip the top part from head to foot and step into it as opposed to crawling in from the top. My experience is that a 6'2" person can fit in this tent with a couple of inches to spare (especially for the price of these tents).
Gary L Thank you, think I'll give it a try.
Gary
ERIC B You should be fine. I'm 5 6 and there's at least 1 1/2 feet extra for me To wiggle around in.
Gary L Thanks Eric, think I'll give it a try.
Paul M What type of tape do people use to wrap the poles and is it a full coverage of the pole or spaced?
GLENN H actually, I have not used my tent as I own several other tents.
reading the reviews regarding occasional snapped poles,
I'd tape them continuously to make them more rugged
as you dont know where the pole may snap on you.
that adds some weight but assures usefulness:
use a lightweight electrical tape to strengthen
and make them usable before a breakage,
if your trip relies on a functional tent pole.
KENNETH K Poles are fully covered, no need for tape to wrap the poles.
I have had no difficulty with the poles pulling apart or snagging, because it is a full sleeve.
(Love The Tent by the way. My favorite part? -it is easy to roll back the center section of the rain fly and look up at the stars as you fall asleep)
Andrew P Without using the rain fly, do the windows zipper up all the way so that someone (or something) outside of the tent won't be able to see in?
KASEY A The Solitaire's rain fly is attached, so you can roll back the yellow (and some black) sections. What's below is mesh - and at the top, this means there's a zipper to escape out from the middle when the fly isn't engaged. There's not much privacy when all of the individual pieces of the fly are rolled up.
BARB G The tent zips up all the way, but a person outside the tent would be able to see in.
KENNETH K No, the ultralight design only covers some windows with the fly. But without the fly the view is great!
JEFFRY S When you remove the rain fly (which rolls up & stays attached to the tent at all times), and close the zippers all the way you can still see inside the tent. Without the rain fly, it offers very little privacy.
JEFFREY S They do zipper up all the way, but you will be able to see in (and thru the tent) without the rain flys. The flys are also permanently attached, so there's no way to make this "uber light" if you're looking for just bug protection. Worth the money/weight to me when they are on sale, I got three from Sunny's.
Something to consider if you're looking at backpacking with this a lot for about the same weight is the Black Diamand First Light when on sale. In addition to being about the same weight, you can fit two people and no gear, or one person with gear, you can sit up in it, and it's four season. It's the tent I carry now. I got two from Sunnys. I still use my Solitaire, but just as a "bug screen" when sleeping on a cot at Scout camp etc.
I have used the Solitaire in a NOV rain/sleet/wind storm at Dolly Sods and it kept me dry, just not able to sit up.
BRIAN M By "windows", perhaps you mean the top part with the zipper along the top? If yes, then the answer to your question is No. The Solitaire is almost entirely mesh and without the rain fly everything in the tent is visible.
Ventilation is not great, despite being almost completely mesh, because there is no "high" venting since the rainfly covers the tent almost all the way to the ground.
DOAN T Without using the rain fly the zipper can be closed all the way and screen like material will allow air in and can be seen from the outside.
Shopper Is this tent going to keep my dry if it rains?
SunnySports S Yes, this tent with a rain fly is quite good in the rain. I have a friend who has it and he has been through some good storms saying the tent held up very nicely. Stay safe and have fun out there! Neal
Shopper I was wondering if this tent could withstand a light snow accumulation and would keep me warm as long as I accompany it with a zero temperature rated bag? I would be around a thousand feet and temperatures though rare, do drop in the teens at night.
SunnySports S This tent will shed light to medium snow fall. The compactness of this tent requires very little heat to warm the air inside. With a good bag you should be great. If you sleep cold, get a bag made for cooler temps.
Shopper Does this tent have a vestibule that is seperated from tent by a zippered door or is it just an extra space aboe or below the head or foot?
SunnySports S That "vestibule" is part of the tent / doorway. I would only use it for storage and not cooking.
Shopper I need to know the size of this tent when it is in it"s storage case to see if it will fit in/on my bags when I"ll on a road trip on my Harley Davidson?
SunnySports S Packed Size is 5 in. x 14 in.
Shopper Can this tent be used on the deck of a boat without staking?
SunnySports S This tent can be set up as "Free Standing", but without the top fly which requires staking.
