Questions about this item:
victoria h the 100 cm. poles are for a person of what height?
RICH F I'm 5'10" and the 110's are just about perfect for me. So I'd say the 100's are probably good for someone 5'5" to 5'8" perhaps.
victoria h Thanks! Preference sees to vary wildly. If one's height is just on the edge of a recommended pole length, it seems the best thing to do is order two sizes and see which size feels more comfortable!
RICH F Definitely a safe bet there. Mine are on the verge of being too short, my arms don't quite make the 90 degree angle, but still comfortable to use.
R BRYSON W That's a tricky question. Since these are not adjustable, you want to be sure you get it right. There's probably a chart somewhere that will tell you a range for each size, but what size you need at a given height really depends a lot on your build (long legs, short torso, etc.) and on your personal preference. If you have trekking poles that you are replacing, you can obviously just measure them. If you do not, a good way to figure out which size will work best for you is to stand on a flat surface in your hiking shoes. Then, bend your elbows to a 90 degree angle, so that your forearm is parallel with the ground. Make a fist as though you were holding a trekking pole and have someone measure from the top of your fist to the ground. This is how long you want your poles to be on a flat surface. Since these poles have a lower grip area that you can go to when you're climbing, I'd recommend going with the next size UP from this measurement. However, if you're only 1-2 cm higher than a size, you might want to size down. This is where it comes down to personal preference. I'd probably still size up. YMMV.
victoria h Thanks so much! I think you are right about personal preference and build. The only way out of this dilemma is to try two different sizes! I really love the ultra light weight, but non-adjustable poles.

GARY G I am 5' 10' and purchased 120 cm poles in Feb. of 2012 primarily for a two week trek in the Alps from Chamonix to Zermatt. There is a range of comfort depending on the person, but Black Diamond suggests that having a larger size is better if one is in doubt or on the edge of two sizes. I found, for example, that simply gripping lower on the poles on the uphill worked well, while having more length on the downhills was very useful. BD suggests under 5' 1" for the 100cm, up to 5' 7" for the 110cm, and up to 5' 11" for the 120. For me, at 5' 10", I found the sizing suggestions spot on. They're great poles, so light and portable, and very well-made. Good luck finding your size.
victoria h Thanks. Most people, you included, suggest sizing up if in doubt. Being 5 1 1/2, I decided to try the 100 cm and the 110s. One pair will be a keeper!

ANDREW G According to BD's sizing chart, the 100 cm poles are for someone 5'-1" or shorter.
victoria h Thanks. I know I am going to love these light-weight poles.
KAY S I'm just under 5'8" and they are perfect.
victoria h Well, if at 5'8" the 100 cms work for you, then they should work for me (5' 1 1/2"), too. Thanks.
Vicki
Shopper Is the length stated include the grip or do I add length for the grip? I am trying to decide what length to buy
RAGHAVENDRA K The length stated *includes* the grip. You don't need to too precise about the length, though. I have two friends who I hike with and we are of different heights (one is about 2" and other is 3" taller than me), but we all use 110cm poles. It works well for all of us.
KAY S I believe it includes the grip. I suggest going with a longer, rather than shorter, estimate. That's because you need the length coming downhill. When going uphill, you can always move your grip lower if you need to.
REENITA D The grip is included in the lenght
R BRYSON W The length stated includes the grip. I've been really happy with the poles. I had to tighten them up a little bit out of the box, but that was very easy with the included instructions.

great poles!
you should buy based on height:
HEIGHT RANGE SUGGESTED Z-POLE LENGTH
< 154 cm < 5 ft 1 in 100 cm
154 - 171 cm 5 ft 1 in - 5 ft 7 in 110 cm
172 - 182 cm 5 ft 8 in - 5 ft 11 in 120 cm
183 cm + 6 ft + 130 cm
MARIANNE D Hi, I purchased these poles a year ago. I believe the length stated is just the pole length, but I'm not certain. For reference, I am 5'4" height. I actually ended up buying and returning two sizes--first bought the 120 cm length, which was a bit too long, then I tried the 110 cm length, which was a bit too short. I finally ended up with a similar model, the Black Diamond FL Z-pole, which has a single adjustment lever at the top of the pole so I could set it to the exact length. The FL poles are just a bit heavier (by a few ounces) because they have this adjustment lever, however--but if you happen to "fall between" the set lengths of the Z-pole they are an excellent choice and I have used mine extensively for nearly a year. Having your trekking poles at the right length is very important to reap the benefits of using them.
A versatile, extremely stable pole with the game-changing Z-Pole technology, the Black Diamond Distance meets the everyday demands of day hikers, backpackers, thru hikers and trail runners. The sturdy 3-piece aluminum shaft aligns in a flash thanks to the speed cone deployment, which secures like an avalanche probe for increased rigidity. The Distance features a lightweight EVA grip with a mini-extension for choking up on steep terrain, and interchangeable rubber and carbide tips. This product can only be shipped to U.S. addresses.
