These are the latest 2012 model BD poles and they can use their top of the line and latest tech pole tips. We use these poles daily. The elliptical shape and carbon molding make these a strong, stable and quiet pole. No looseness. Can use either the tech tips (carbide comes with it or the added insert rubber tips) or, like we use, the inexpensive Black Diamond optional push-on rubber tips you can get from any major sports retailer for road work. The inexpensive rubber push-on tips cover the standard carbide tips that come with the pole and work great for road surfaces and dirt.

The grips are more of a hybrid. Neither slippery rubber or foam which deteriorates. A great heel on the grip for the palm, comfortable for those who use it for the push and for correct pole exercise and extension.
Locks are top of the line and snap in place with a firm no "rattle and roll". Solid and superb. Black Diamond support is great and helped me choose the model and accessories. This site has the best price and was prompt in answering my questions about the model and year. We love these poles and will purchase more for the family.
