I keep this pinned to my lumbar pack while hiking. It's probably not super precise, as the other reviewer said, but this is true of most compasses you will find in outdoor stores (compare two side by side and rarely will they be in complete agreement). Unless you need one of the very precise, very expensive ones, this may fit your needs. In our case, we are typically hiking on trails, and when we get to intersections and the choices are stark (northeast or south) this has made the choice clear. It's never let us down!

Bought 3 to hang one on each of my daypacks/fanny packs/etc. for dayhikes. One pointed south all the time so I threw it away as it wasn`t worth the trouble to send it back. After carrying the second one for a while I checked it against my swiss army $12 compass. It didn`t consistently point the same direction even when I put both on the ground several feet apart and stepped back a few feet. I salvaged the brass pin and threw it away. The 3rd one I will give to a neighbor kid to play with.
