I like the size and fit of this backpack. I can pack surprising amount of gear into it due to expanding helmet pocket. There are some problems, though. It is not rain resistant - a bit of medium strength rain and the contents will be wet. Granted, there is no rain proof claim in the description of this backpack. The bigger problem is a leaky valve. The original one started leaking after about 10 hikes with the water bladder. It leaks in open position, so technically you can close it between sips, but it becomes pain in the neck when hiking and dangerous when mountain biking. Even worse, the Platypus Big Zip SL Drinking Tube Kit I bought to replace the leaky one, started to leak right away.

I originally bought my Platypus TOKUL XC 8.0 in 2013/14 for a bike ride across the USA and around New Zealand. It was a total champ for the ride and incredibly durable, comfortable, and well thought-out in design. My TXC8 is red ripstop nylon with yellow lettering and highlights. It has a nice clip-in for a rear cycling light, a mesh pouch on the back that's half the size of the pack, a zipper opening and a deep pocket with separate mesh pockets for all your bike tools and extra little bits and snacks, and the main compartment with a 3L poly pouch. It also has attach points (yellow rope) for extra gear.

My brand new platypus Tokul 8.0 went with me this very past weekend to the Nevado de Toluca Cirque. Nevado de Toluca is a beautiful mountain. The summit is at 4,680 m over sea level (not for rookies), but the cirque is a full trip all around the crater meaning 8 Km and 8 hrs walking at least 5 hrs of them at 4,000 m over pure volcanic rock. Last season I was using my typical attack back pack, but I wanted to try Platypus on these type of mountains (3,500 - 4,500 m range) due to the 3.0 l BigZip bladder, light weight and the free motion felt. I have seen this pack on trekking and biking reviews but not at the mountain. Great investment!!!

Excellent pack to keep loaded and ready for everyday rides. Light and minimalist with just enough space for long weekend missions. The elastic mesh pocket is great for holding a jacket or vest. Excellent internal organization keeps trail stops quick and lean.

When you need a combination of storage space and low-profile design, you need the Platypus Tokul X.C. 8.0 Hydration Pack. You'll be comfortable thanks to the RidgeAir back panel with ventilation channels and lightweight, breathable mesh, and you can take plenty of water with you in the included 3.0 Big Zip LP reservoir, a taste-free reservoir with a wide moth and quick-disconnect hose. Keep your bite valve close for easy access with the magnetic hydration hose retention, and when it's time to refill your reservoir, the dedicated hydration pocket makes it easy to access, clean, and refill. You can easily carry your helmet in the front stash pocket that expands to fit a helmet, and there's organization options and two pump sleeves. Finally, the Platypus Tokul X.C. 8.0 Hydration Pack features reflective detailing and a light loop to help you be seen in low light conditions.
