Mine are 1st Gen Metal Frame.

I love my wife's 25 inch Lightning Ascents. I bought the metal frame ascents when they first came out. The siloconized straps are still going strong, inspite of summer sun exposure outside in Sicily on the side of Mount Etna for 3 years. MSR has tinkered with the bindings, and that is all good, but hey guys, let's cut the weight by offering the MSR Lightning Ascent Titanium! Pay more and get more I always say.

Go everywhere snowshoe

Last winter did about 250 miles in all kinds of terrain, snow, ice, rocks, broke trail on about half the distance. Although straps came out of keepers they never unfastened. These are great on ice and technical climbs.

Yes I would buy these again, and yes I would recommend these

These work very well for me. I have used them quite a bit up at Crystal Mt. ski resort on some pretty steep stuff, on ice, slush, hard pack, fresh… I would want a longer size, (or add tails) for the softest and deep untracked powder; but that's rare for me and I go into the trees often. The straps are very secure and easy to get on and off; however, I did add a second clip as the ends of a couple of the strips would come out of its clip and flop around, they are cheap and a second one (facing the opposite way) solved the issue. Overall, I think these are the best shoes out there.

Great for aggressive terrain!

~6 Mile Snowshoe Hike in RMNP. Product had fantastic traction, and was fairly comfortable.

These rock. Did a long 7 hour hike, lots of steep icey grades, mixed snow, work better than expected. I would highly recommend this product.

Yes, yes and yes!

I have taken these snowshoes out on 2 trips. One was 2 1/2 hours and the other was 3 1/2 hours. They performed great and would recommend these to anyone who is active in the winter outdoors! The one issue I had and it wasn't much, was that the straps kept coming out of the little clips that hold them once you tighten them up. They never came apart, it is just the straps were loose a lot of the time, even though I would re-engage them??

Great snowshoes, but the buckles drive me nuts.

These snowshoes are great and can take you anywhere. Unfortunately I had to keep stopping to resecure them to my feet. The aggressive crampons are the best I have used on multiple models... Just need to keep them attached.

High quality, well made, capable.

Picked these up to do some backcountry snowboarding. Used them to summit Mount St.Helens the other day. They worked great. Fits great on snowboard boots too.

I would buy this product, but only for specific purposes

i purchased this product for two purposes. First, for accessing ice fishing opportunities, primarily across lakes and using trails. Second, as a forest manager I require snowshoes for activities such as woodland inventory. Crossing lakes and using trails - this snowshoe is better than my old fashioned wooden ones. Also for climbing hills. And they don't absorb moisture. However, when going off trail into a woodland with deeper snow under a minimal crust, the flotation was quite poor compared with my 11" x 40" hybrid bear paw shoes. I weigh 200 lb and purchased the 30 inch model and gathered from other reviews that this model would provide satisfactory flotation in such snow cover. So, when you read below that "yes, I would recommend this to a friend", there are cautions.

Very happy with the purchase and looking forward future use.

I purchased these shoes to attempt a winter summit in the White Mtns of NH. While we didn't end up reaching the top, the shoes performed amazingly over a diverse set of terrain and deep snow. I always thought the design of these shoes were a bit overboard but when I got them out in some serious conditions, I realized why and appreciated the engineering.

Best Bang for the $

Originally borrowed these from a friend when I first tried snowshoeing 10+ years ago-- and fell in love right off the bat. Yes, a little spendy, but worth every penny when I ponied up the $ to get my own pair. I have taken these on trips up Rainier, Denali, and all in between. They are bomber on steep icy traverses with/without heavy loads on the back. In short I have ridden them hard and they have held up when I needed them. Yes, I have abused them to the point of needing repair -- Customer service peeps know their stuff and have always been responsive to my questions and requests for repair. On to my second pair after 10 years on the first-- expect to be using these until I hit the rocking chair or pushing up daisies

I used the snowshoes this weekend in 3 in of fresh snow and they were amazing. Perfect amount of float and plenty of grip for when it got steep.

Excellent Snowshoes

I bought mine in the fall of 2017 and have used them on day trips about 15 times now. I've been very happy with their performance, both in powder and on hard-packed/icy snow. The grip is excellent whether ascending or descending in hard-packed snow and it's nice to have confidence you aren't going to slip, especially when descending. The bindings are easy to secure and/or adjust for comfort and you can do it with your gloves on. Overall an excellent product and a plus that they are made in the USA.

The best snowshoe I've tried

I bought the lightning accents for work and pleasure uses. I love how quiet they are compared to hard plastic shoes. The bindings keep my foot secure and the heel bar is much appreciated when going up steep grades.

Good snowshoes but toe spikes and the bracket tend to fail

As a senior during the winter I try to get out to the mountains twice per week on a mixture of broken, unbroken and non-trail trips. This means that there are times that we traverse rocks, fallen trees and steep or deep snow. My first pair had the pivot bracket break and the replacement pair has the toe spikes break two weeks apart after about 2 years of use. Other members of our club have had similar experiences. Problem is to find a better replacement as they seem to have been designed and manufactured to close to the limit.

My review of the MRS Lightning Ascent Snowshoe 2018 model

My name is Jeff Hersey-Having been on snowshoes for over 40 years I have experienced the top of the line of many brands. The MSR is a slight cut above Atlas and Tubbs best offerings. The traction is unsurpassed and the construction is top grade. These snowshoes are light on your legs and you will enjoy deploying the lift bar to raise your heels as you travel up a slope. The bindings are easy to use and secure your feet well. They will accommodate almost any size boot where as you will find other brands to be quite limited. Be sure to determine what length you need by your weight AND what you are carrying. I have used the extensions for MSRs snowshoes before and find them worthless for me. They add flotation to the heel end only of the snowshoe and it drives the front of the snowshoe down. It is best to order the correct size snowshoe to begin with and forgo the extensions. All and all, these are the best snowshoes I have ever used and they are construction well enough to last many, many years. A brief note about the manufacturer-- MSR makes some great products and their customer service is among the best. Buy these snowshoes, they are worth every penny!

Great snowshoes

My wife and I never snowshoe on trails, we are always busting through deep snow exploring the woods. And all of it's steep hills. We each have the Lightnings and two pairs of other brand snowshoes. These are hands down the best! No more sliding up and down the hills for us and excellent floatation through the deep snow. They even grip great going up and over downed, snow covered trees.

Excellent Snowshoe for Running Away From An Angry Yeti

By Paul Y.

The Lightning Ascent Shoes for Snow will have you walking like a bow-legged cowboy inside of fifteen minutes. Seriously, these things float on snow like a waterski with teeth. And after you make a few exaggerated faceplants and blow the impacted snow out of your nostrils, you'll be able to run in these things like your wearing giant sugar cookie-cutting forms on your feet. They're great! The strappy things that attach your feet to the frame are rock solid, but the clippy things that hold the...
