If you spend a lot of time on the water, you’ll realize there are some things that you just have to keep dry—and ziplock bags don’t cut it! Whether it’s a small box that protects your phone and keys while you’re out on the lake, or a bigger duffel bag for clothes and bedding on a rafting trip, we’ve got everything you need to keep your gear safe and dry.
Waterproof backpacks and bags
Our waterproof duffels are big, durable, and intended for the roughest uses. The best waterproof bags feature roll-top/latching top access openings and strong straps or D-rings for strapping them to boat frames. The best raft guides always “rig to flip,” and a good waterproof bag will ensure that you have a warm, dry sleeping bag to curl up in after that gnarly flip in a class V rapid.
If you’re carrying your gear on your back instead of in a boat, you’ll need a waterproof backpack with padding, shoulder straps, and a waist belt. Our fully-waterproof backpacks may be overkill for regular hikes, and a simple backpack cover will keep your pack dry on rainy hikes. But if you’ll be canyoneering with multiple swims along your course of travel, a waterproof backpack is essential.
Secure fragile gear with watertight cases
Waterproof packs and bags are great for bulky, soft gear that you just roll up and lash down tightly. But where should you store smaller valuables or fragile gear like your phone, camera, or computer? Small, transparent waterproof bags are great for phones, but if you really want insurance against breakage, get a rigid, internally-padded dry box.
Dry boxes can be stacked, strapped down, and completely submerged, all while keeping your most fragile gear safe. If you’re planning a multi-day river trip, you’ll want several different sizes.
Where should I use my waterproof gear?
All this gear is great for rough water boating, but it has many other uses, too. Transporting gear in an open pickup truck bed? Use waterproof bags and you won’t worry about the rain forecast. Don’t have enough room in your tent for your clothes bag while camping? You can leave a waterproof backpack overnight in any type of weather. And if you expect your camera may be handled roughly during travel, a plastic and padded waterproof case will minimize your worries.
