Sleeping bags
Nothing is nicer than slipping into a snug, cozy sleeping bag after a day spent in the great outdoors. The right sleeping bag will keep you dry, warm, and rested so you can recharge for another day full of adventures.
The right style for your activities
“Mummy-style” bags closely fit your form, and they’re intended to move with your body as you toss and turn in your sleep. They also feature hoods that you can close so that only your nose is exposed to the outside. You’ll want a mummy bag for backpacking and other lightweight travel.
A less-claustrophobic alternative to mummy bags is a standard rectangular sleeping bag. They’re less efficient at trapping body heat and much bulkier, but these bags allow you to roll more freely in your sleep, are more likely to be lined with comfy fleece or flannel, and can even be zipped together for couples camping.
Temperature ratings for just-right sleep
If you plan to camp only during the summer, you’ll be set with a bag that’s rated down to around 35°F. However, if you camp often throughout the year, you may be better off considering 15°F “3 season” sleeping bags, which are all you need for camping from March to October.
If it appears that any sort of snow or ice will occur during your planned activity, a pricier bag that goes down to at least -15°F will be essential. Extra sleeping bag liners or small blankets can add 10-20° of warmth to your bag.
Fill material: down or synthetic?
Down-filled sleeping bags give you the most warmth for the lightest weight, and they can compress down to a small size. However, down loses all of its insulation when wet. Synthetic fillings cost less and tolerate wet conditions better, but they’re heavier and bulkier.
